OT: 83 Years Ago Today - Pearl Harbor

Visited Pearl Harbor for the first time last March. Such an amazing place. The Arizona Memorial was a powerful experience, especially the Shrine Room. Also, got to take a brief on-deck tour of the Missouri, but didn't have time for the full tour. Heading back to Oahu in 2026, so I will see more.

Was there in 2011
Crazy that oil is still coming out of the USS Arizona

Going there was one of the more surreal experiences I’ve had in my life - RIP to all of the American hero’s that lost their lives on that fateful day 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

The MIssouri is docked basically at the berth where the Oklahoma was during the attack. If you stand on the starboard side and look out towards the Loch you can almost imagine the Japanese torpedo bombers making their runs.
It's amazing with all the destruction that day that there were only three ships, Oklahoma, Arizona and Utah, that didn't return to service during the war.

How about this fact…

Every Japanese ship involved in the attack was destroyed, sunk or captured by the end of the war.

Four of the six carriers in the attack, Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu, only last for about another six months. All four were sunk at Midway.
There are some historians who say the Yamamoto never said the "I'm afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant..." line after he was told our carriers were not at Pearl.

And I'm not sure if the line I quoted earlier and attributed to Henry Ford II in "Ford vs. Ferrari" (when he says to Caroll Shelby), "See all those factories over there? During the War I switched them from cars to make B-17s..." really happened either.

But I like it. 😎

By the end, there were upwards of 12 million men (and even some women too) in uniform directly involved with the war effort. I have no idea what the number was of the countless millions, with a capital M, supporting them. Must have been huge.

I believe it was B24s not B17s.

Looks like he just said "bombers" in it.
