So its no secret that the continuing gentrification of Downtown Jersey City is replacing mom and pop stores with wannabe trendy restaurants and spas, etc.

Well, the A-1 Deli (one of few decent delis around in the downtown area) who actually made pretty good sandwiches, lost their lease and closed down.

You can imagine walking by recently and seeing this in its place!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, maybe it was in here that Manahan worked on his Pulitzer Prize winning and classic noteworthy article on the Big 10 and its effect on the Porn Business.

A-1 was awesome for sandwiches. Never disappointed after a late night coming back from the city. Too bad they are gone.

No longer in JC, but sorry to hear about A-1 leaving. Great late night sandwiches. There was that shooting outside A-1 a couple years ago...sad story.

The decline of JC continues. Just like the cowardly mayor who refuses to call for his buddy's resignation from the city council after drinking drunk and almost killing a few people.

Does lost their lease equal they couldn't afford to renew?

Cowardly? Wasn't Fullop a marine?

Just a reminder, TK is paid to be here. If you notice RUMike, that's his other moniker when he gets banned. You will notice that the NJ.Com and JCList posters that support Christie say the same lines verbatim and troll non political threads, like he did here. Christie, like Putin, has a paid troll army, it's what happens when facts turns against you.

Jersey City leads the state in job and economic growth.

NJ as a whole- 49th

Who is a leader speaks for itself.

Jersey city leads in growth due to the events of 9/11. All the financial firms began offsite back ups mostly in the JC area. And prior to that these firms were drawn to the area because it was a sh!t hole and property was cheap and abandoned and also it's proximity to downtown.

So I guess you can give the 'leadership' the credit, for driving the area into the ground.

Myanmar would be leading in job growth if it was where JC is.

Good effort though!

What do you mean that TK is paid to be here?
Just another conspiracy theory by our resident moron lib that loses debate after debate. Notice how he continues to desperately ignore the crooked actions of his beloved Fulop (i.e., just another typical Hudson county pol). It's so funny. Love it!

If by decline you mean the gentrification of a once rather crapy city then yes.

T2K this may or may not apply to you as I don't mean this personally. I don't get the bitching and moaning when sh!tty places are turned around and know are different from The way they once were. I never understand people complaining about less crime and nicer environments.

90% of JC is still shitty and crime infested. And of course, it's still a political cesspool.

I am not complaining about less crime and nicer environment. I am lamenting about the loss of some great mom and pop stores. There was a great Polish Meat market and Deli on Jersey Ave., gone, A-1 Deli, gone, Pet store, gone, I could go on and on, this is the price we have to pay.

New restaurants, bars, spas, banks, look nice, but are Jersey City residents using them? New expensive restaurants are not for Jersey City residents to eat every night, you would go broke, people are coming in from all over NJ for the restaurants on Newark Ave. Again this has a lot of positive benefits for the city, but so did the mom and pop stores, and I am just sorry to see them go.

Way off on your percentage. Newport, Downtown, Waterfront, Paulus Hook, Hamilton Park, and Marina area are very good, a lot of the Heights is turning around as well.

Yes, Ocean Ave and MLK drive needs a lot more work and there is senseless crime, but a lot of Jersey City has prospered.

And I hate to tell you that every city government in NJ is a political cesspool, definitely not limited to JC.

What town do you live in?

I understand what you are saying but that is progress. I two would be upset if Tastee subs was bulldozed for whatever.

Jersey city wasn't a great place. That's why my grandparents generation left. Sure there are always pockets but that's the exception. You can't expect improvement without change.

You forgot the Tube Bar at Journal Square ! RIP, Red

I'll miss La Conguita more.

Anyone who thinks JC is declining is insane. The Heights, JSQ, lots of the area sounding Lincoln Park, new Berry Lane park...

There are certainly still a lot of issues but declining... Well it is good to know T2K still doesn't let facts get in the way of a good opinion.

2nd Street bakery is still running strong. Pop passed away but mom is still there everyday. Gino took over quite nicely for his pop.

Then say you are not paid to be here. You don't, because if you get caught, you will get in trouble for breaking the law, and so will your boss, Christie, even more so than he has been

Jersey City is ranked #6th in America in terms of economic growth.

NJ is ranked 49th.

Yet T2Christie thinks that "Jersey City is in decline" but that Christie is a leader?

We compared real estate price growth, he lost that one too.

T2Christie/RUMike whatever name he gets after his next banning, also never says where he is from so that we can't compare JC real estate prices to wherever he gets paid to flame from. So don't expect an answer.

That is of course bull. They could have moved to the Bronx or Brooklyn. Plenty left the tri state altogether or went to Stamford or other areas. Of all the things to attribute to 9/11- I mean you are aware how long the Exchange Place station was closed after?

I'm not really sure what you're talking about but Fulop did not become mayor until 2013. Since that time Jersey City has been one of the very few places to recover from the recession in the state.

Some credit actually does go to Giuliani IMO for cleaning up NYC and that effect spread here. Since that time however, as you can see in this thread, right wing pols now pay people to bash a rare bright spot in a state they drove into the ground. Christie is zero brains and all braggadocio, he has no accomplishments other than raising the cost of living for middle class New Jerseyans while selling the state to Exxon and the David Samsons and Wildsteins of the world, might as well steal what JC has done.

Then say you are not paid to be here. You don't, because if you get caught, you will get in trouble for breaking the law, and so will your boss, Christie, even more so than he has been
Where there is smoke there is normally fire. How much is Fulop paying you? I heard from a few posters that you are now working for JC and Fulop directly, after you got fired from your old job. Hey, if you can get the work, that's fine. I wish you luck!

That and it was one of the last places left with waterfront. Was only a matter of time before someone developed it. Irony is, if you start a thread about Texas and how week it does economically and give credit to a Republican certain posters will be quick to say it's not policy but oil. Oil=NYC waterfront.

Yeah then why is Bayonne or Elizabeth or the Bronx or some of the worst parts of Brooklyn not being developed the same way?

The minute oil prices sunk so did Texas...the real growth in Texas is in Austin and then the other 3 big cities and guess who controls all 4 of them and how they voted the last two elections...

Let's compare how Austin is doing to Wisconsin or NJ or LA....

LOL not only is that false (see I can say that, and not worry about breaking the law), but I took a new job with a nice raise in the private sector. Unlike you I try to function as a productive member of society, not a taker.

I was hoping to hear some stories about losing your mom and pop stores, not a political pissing match.

Anyone unhappy with the current state of affairs in JC has options. Brick City would liekly suit you fine. It has the PATH and gentrification is not a concern. Also the food is awesome.

Then say you are not paid to be here. You don't, because if you get caught, you will get in trouble for breaking the law, and so will your boss, Christie, even more so than he has been

Sorry, but your theory about him being paid to shill for Christie doesn't make any sense. It's not like he's actually going to convince anybody that doesn't already like Christie to start liking him. He's not exactly posting things that are winning the hearts and minds of independents like me.

How did this thread turn political is what I want to know?

I'm with Spanky on this. And would add that in addition to relieving yourself on the doorway, tossing a rock that has RU written on it through the window would also be appropriate. Pretty sure NJ.COM would find a way to pin it on Julie Hermann.

Outside of JC, I noticed several businesses that have been in business 10-25 years go out of business even when they appear to be successful. In all cases, the rent went up. The landlords are idiots trying to rape the successful businesses since the spaces will be empty for quite some time. So many new businesses opening up and closing after a year or two.

I guess there aren't as many corporate jobs in NJ anymore and they try their hand at a small business but fail. Lot of new hair salons, hamburger franchises($15 burger with fries) and sandwich shops.
