I picked my first few tomatoes today. They are so good I love to make BLT minus B sandwiches. I think it is the best sandwich in the world! with juicy home grown tomatoes.

Your plants must get a lot more sun than mine. My tomatoes are still green and probably 2-3 weeks from picking.

What variety do you grow?

Over 100 cherry tomatoes and at least a dozen solid herlume tomatoes. Ton green on the vines still.

I picked my first one today (Ramapo I think). Another one should be ready maybe Monday. Still a bunch of green ones. Mine get a good 12 hours of sun a day.

We picked our first tomatoes today only a few, most of them are still green. Cherry tomatoes have been able to pick for two weeks now. Starting to pick peppers. All our plants were purchased at Agg Field Day. We picked up a few yellowish orange cherry tomatoes by accident. Sweetest cherry tomatoes I have ever had, not sure what their called though.

You guys are killing me! It's the middle of winter down here! Nothing's better than a great BLT. Putting avocado on them is SOP down here and very good as well. But often, it's kind of a Canadian bacon sort of thing, and that doesn't cut it for me. Has to be crispy American bacon (called "streaky bacon" down here). I can't grow tomatoes as it rarely gets above about 75 down on the south end of the South Island. I'm strongly considering putting in a green house just to get great tomatoes!

There's nothing like being in Jersey when the tomatoes and salt and pepper corn come in! Have one for me, guys!

I already ate two tomatoes and I grew them from seeds. They grew faster then my neighbor who bought them about 1ft tall from Home Depot.
Neighbor was shocked when he saw my tomatoe plants being taller than his after about 2 months... :) I do water them everyday... and they get plenty of sun 10+ hrs...

I brought in my first group of tomatoes yesterday, the good big uglies that taste great. All my peppers are growing like crazy, jalapenos, habanero and ghosts. Cucumbers, green beans still need some time.

Has anyone grown their own Jersey corn at home?

Love fresh tomatoes. Luckily I have a friend at work who's way better at growing them than I would be and she brings a few freshly picked tomatoes in for me every week. She said the first ones should be ready next week. Waiting.

The Frog and the Peach used to serve (and maybe still does - haven't been in a couple of years in summer) the perfect Jersey appetizer: fresh sliced home-grown (they grow their own) Jersey tomatoes drizzled with a little top-of-the-line olive oil and garnished with a little sea salt and fresh basil. Perfect.

I always make sure I have at least 1 Rutgers tomato plant in the garden. Picked my first one several days ago, which always goes to a BLT. Life is good.

My Peppers , Cucumbers, and Squash are on fire. My Rutgers Tomatoes haven't quite turned Salmon yet...

Rutgers tomatoes? WTF is that ?

My San Marzano plants grew so large that they collapsed the wire support cages and tumbled over onto the ground. Only major problem was the black spot on the base of the tomatoes. I should have added calcium earlier in the growing process.

Yes. I have about 15 plants in the ground but they're not looking too good. Probably a good 2 weeks away from picking my first one.

Growing Beefsteak, Rutgers, San Marzano, and cherry tomatoes. Picked a few about a week ago. Also growing cilantro and habanero for salsa.

At one time, probably the most consumed tomato in the world... Campbells tomato soup.. Heinz ketchup.

**** linky ****
In 1928 the Campbell’s Soup Company, based in Camden, NJ made a cross between two leading tomato varieties at the time: Marglobe and JTD (named for Dr. John T. Dorrance, a chemist who joined the company in 1897 and invented condensed soup). In 1929, Rutgers plant breeder Lyman Schermerhorn selected the best of these plants and for the next six years conducted field tests and made further selections until in 1934 the most superior selection was released as the “Rutgers” tomato. The Rutgers tomato was a genuine horticultural improvement over other commercial varieties. Breeding objectives resulted in an amazing array of improved attributes, including: pleasing flavor and taste of the juice; more uniform “sparkling” red internal color ripening from center of the tomato outward; freedom from fruit cracking; vigorous healthy foliage to ripen more fruit and reduce sunscald; firm thick fleshy fruit walls for its time, though considered extremely soft by today’s definition of tomato firmness.

Not only did Rutgers provide a top performing tomato for New Jersey’s processors, such as Campbell’s Soup and Heinz, but Rutgers tomato continued to be a preferred choice of commercial growers through much of the mid-twentieth century. It was grown worldwide, and used in breeding and selection of other improved varieties.

Rutgers leads an effort now to find/reproduce the original strain of the Rutgers Tomato.

The new Rutgers Scarlet Strawberry may one day become as popular.

Picked up a few plants at Ag Field Day (Brandywine, Beefsteak, Jet Star, Box Car Wille, and San Marzano) and planted first week of May. They didn't have any Rutgers or Ramapo available at the time. We have probably picked at least a dozen or more so far....Brandywine has been particularly good. San Marzano plant has a lot of tomatoes but not quite ripe yet. A couple plants are browning on the lower leaves so need to figure out the problem....not insects. We also planted cucumber seeds (2 mounds) and the other picked 25 cucumbers. My wife has been bringing them to coworkers since we can't quite eat that many. But needless to say have not had to buy tomatoes or cukes for a few weeks now....Jersey Fresh!!

Rutgers tomatoes are a thing? How is this not our mascot? It would explain the all red uniforms we've been using recently at least.

"The Rutgers Fighting Tomatoes are taking the field..."

Hehe I have one cherry tomato that is nice and red that decided to beat the dozens of other tomatoes on the vine to the punch. I haven't picked it yet.

I never had luck with my casual attempts to farm up in JERSEY but it's not called the Garden State for nothing. There is/was nothing that could compare to Jersey Beefsteak Tomatoes,Jersey corn, peaches, apples .You name it. They were the BEST.

Ok. THAT is NOT going to work! Tomatoes will be thrown on the field!

It reminds me of when Lou Holtz was coaching at Arkansas and when we assured of going to the Orange Bowl by winning a game, the fans threw oranges on the field at the end of the game. Lou commented that he was happy that we weren't going to the Gator Bowl!

And if Florida State University cannot be the Seminoles anymore, I suggest that that they become the Fighting Marsupials!

Last year I planted a peach and apple orchard on my property. Have 12 apple and 6 peach trees and they are really taking off. Must be the soil and water daily. In two years should have a pretty good crop. I'm picking all the fruit off the first two years in order to make the root system and scaffolding stronger. Can't wait to taste them.
P.S. Growing organically is really a pain in the ass

Princess, Purple Russian and beefsteak. I put them in 5 gallon buckets and put them where they get a lot of sun.

This was a picture from the farmer's market last year, but these are just some of the tomatoes that we grow. We've added a bunch this year (and cut back on the grapes a bit).
