I was at the passing camp yesterday, and it struck me that...as far as Livingston has come, Busch has really seen better days. It was always a terrible campus architecturally: the worst kind of functional 1960s office park buildings, sparse landscaping, and parking lots parking lots parking lots. But now it's all those things plus it's looking faded and grubby. The info signs seem washed out. The student center--once the shiniest of the bunch--is in need of a major upgrade. In short, I don't know what can be done but it's hardly the best foot forward for the university when hosting a recruit. College Avenue is going to be awesome once the latest construction projects are done (honors college, academic building, new hillel house etc) and Livingston's renaissance speaks for itself...but Busch? Anyway just MHO.

AFAIK theres plans for a new engineering building. Also there should be a new chemistry building soon.

Not sure about renovations for the student center.

Completely agree that Busch needs some attention. Thankfully it looks like that attention will happen in the next 5 years.

Specifically, this brand new Chemistry building should be done by next summer (to be located behind the current Wright-Rieman building);

Also, here's a fact sheet on the chemistry building: http://facilities.rutgers.edu/content/media-files/Chemistry_Chem_Bio_Narrative_9-8-14_-_a.pdf

If you're curious about more future work, there is a lot of knowledge to be gleaned at this website:http://masterplan.rutgers.edu/reports/rutgers-2030-volume-1-new-brunswick

Specifically Section 4.3 (starting page 205)

Page 222 has a rendering of a new campus center also.

Finally, here's the new engineering gateway building, expected to be complete in 2017 right in front of the Biomedical Engineering building and by the campus center: http://news.rutgers.edu/news-releas...ngineering-busch-campus/20150202#.VZA5E_lVikp

That looks really nice. WTF why do they improve SOE now and not when I was there... :uzi::chairshot:

I could be wrong about this, but I believe the building in the article is only for Civil Engineering and that the new SOE building would be behind the BCC and the current SOE building. I think?

It's going to be a Gateway (or general) Engineering building which will also house civil engineering. Civil is currently spread through the CAIT building, the civil trailer building and the civil laboratory building.

This will be behind the Student center in the parking area next to the civil trailer (and biomed trailer not building)

Good that whole area behind the EIT lab, machine shop, micro fab clean rooms was a big eyesore. This'll help cover that up.

Though the main eng building needs to have a face lift. It still looks like it was built during the 1960s-70s inside and out. Some interior and exterior remodeling to look more modern would go a long way.

The issue with "contemporary" designs is that they look dated in 30 years. I'm sure we'll be having this conversation again in 30 years.

I think the plan is to demo the current Engineering building in phases in the future. Most likely something being built in the A or C wings which allows for wing's B and D to be created into greenspace, eventually.

Originally the plan was to put the building in that parking lot in the picture you showed. However they moved it to be in front of the biomed building in the most recent physical master plan. Take a look at the .pdf I linked and on the last couple pages of the Busch section it shows where everything will go. They are going to move the road that goes in front of the student center to accommodate the new engineering gateway building.

Oh really? I had no clue, thanks.

To the OP: Some of what you say is true. But you need to look at some close by flagship state universities to the west and see similar architectural nonsense.

Theyve been building more or less nonstop on Busch for the past 60 years, unlike the other campuses. They arent going to stop. I mean Busch has new apartments (which architecturally are the best at Rutgers. Its constantly getting new academic buildings and new athletics stuff is always a possibility. The construction isnt as noticeable as Livingston and CA because its piecemeal instead of an enormous revamping of huge chunks of the campus.

That's interesting. Granted I hardly did an exhaustive survey but one thing that struck me is that the campus looked pretty much the same as it did in 1998 when I first arrived. Which are the new apartments? Would love to see an image as I obviously missed them (Busch is a big sprawling place).

In the old BAMM parking lot. Literally, down the road from where you were.
