I can't keep up.

I'm 62 years old and aside from a cholesterol level well-managed with statins, am in perfect health (also lost 20 lbs in the last 6 months).

I'm keeping my nightly bourbon. I'm keeping my daily weed. I feel confident that when I'm dead and gone none of my beneficiaries will be saying, "If only he didn't do so many drugs..."

Well, I’m 69 and it seems the illnesses appear after your 65. I started pot at the time I reduced my drinking, they affect different organs and doctors seem to be more tolerant to pot. I’m just trying to get to 85, a lot more prescriptions the last 2 years and now realizing how old I am. I’m having my second heart value repair shortly.

couldn't some of this also be attributed to just the aging of America during the last 30 years? (I said some). Hard to believe people don't know drinking too much isn't good for you long term. I do but it's my one vice and I admit it. Have cut way back over the past few years but I still drink more than I should. My annual bloodwork I just got back was best in 10 years but I'm sure I've done some damage. Good news is some things can be repaired.

I've mentioned this a bunch of times - alcohol is becoming the new tobacco. Even a moderate amount of use causes serious harm on the body. An ever-growing amount of evidence proves this to be the case.

Why does anyone need to drink or use pot? Just live a healthy life. Be smart.

I used to drink either whiskey or bourbon on the rocks before dinner everyday. However I was diagnosed with esophagus cancer last year. After going through radiation treatments and chemo therapy I have cut consumption to 2 times per week diluted with water.

Yep alcohol is bad.
Seems like the new health craze is liver supplements and products
Anyone try them or have any insight?
I drink so I take milk thistle , dandelion root , and try to drink lots of water. Not sure how much of it helps.

alcohol is a poison. It causes cancer and has other negative side effects. The research is clear and it is becoming the new tobacco. Lot of the younger generations don't drink anymore.

I will have booze on occasion as a treat. Never more than 1 beer. Probably can count on 1 hand how many times I drink in a year.

Absolutely agree. Unfortunately diseases and health issues rear their heads with humans living longer. Taking the good with the bad. This is not to say that everyone getting old will develop some illness either. And yes, alcohol is a poison so it isn't a surprise that these are connected.

Working in the pharma industry I frequently hear this conversation come up and it's an interesting topic. I still enjoy some drinks on the weekend but I know that as I age I will continue to adjust my lifestyle as well.

Last year they told us it was good for your heart

Any kind of study can be bought these days.
Maybe cancer thing is just the law firms looking for another target (like "forever chemicals" - reeks of focus groups)

"U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy announced on Jan. 3 that alcohol consumption poses a grave enough cancer risk to merit placing warning labels on alcoholic beverage containers. It didn’t take long for personal injury attorneys to start up the “if you or a loved one” messaging.

The Surgeon General’s advisory on alcohol and cancer risk inspired Parker Waichman LLP, a New York City-based law firm specializing in personal injury, mass tort and environmental law, to announce it was seeking plaintiffs for a class-action lawsuit against the alcohol industry."

Personal injury powerhouse Parker Waichman goes after alcohol industry over cancer
Possible class-action suit is motivated by Surgeon General’s cancer advisory.

Working out daily and eating healthy probably doesn't protect you from the harmful effects of alcohol and weed. I just don't get it.
because it's enjoyable? I love have a bottle of wine with the Mrs or going with her to a local bar, having some beers and discussing our day. Is it bad for you? definitely but so most of the medications you like to make believe aren't. This isn't a knock on Pharma but any toxin you put in your body has negative effects on your health. You could easily say just "I just don't get it" to the millions of people taking lifestyle medications

My alcohol content is usuallly limited to weekends, a habit that I’ve carried into retirement. I gave up hard alcohol and beer decades ago but have a strong taste for red wine. Of course I like to rationalize my wine consumption, such as the well known health benefits of red wine. The presence of resveratrol and antioxidants which are effective in fighting disease. I’ve never smoked , eat healthy and exercise every day. I’m 67 and have enjoyed good health, with some joint inflammation issues over the last few years. Genetics and good fortune play an important role in living a long life in addition to lifestyle.

Both can be true - alcohol may be good for the heart (disolves fatty blockages?) and bad for cancer risk (damages dna), and depending on when you start drinking and how much, you may be able to achieve some benefit. Just speculating, but maybe people who drink wine with food regularly, have a different outcome then people who drink on an empty stomach regularly.

I'm curious why cancer deaths are rising related to alcohol. Are there more drinkers? I doubt it. Conclusions from these correlation studies need to be taken with a little grain of salt, but there still may be truth to it. People who drink less or not at all may also make other healthier lifestyle choices and visa versa. The reasons people drink may also impact health.

I find it enjoyable like most who engage in either activity. Moderation with anything is key. I do find myself drinking less tho as i get older although I still have the occasional bender like last weekend's beerfest at the Deauville Inn.

My parents are 92 and smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day. Genes over ride everything else.

I live the life of a monk. No booze, no weed, no drugs. Eat healthy, exercise quite a bit. For living such a pristine life, I'll keel over soon! The large majority of the men in my family died in their 60's and early 70s.

Your pharma example makes no sense. The vast, vast, vast majority of medications aren't linked to cancer like alcohol. They have minor and reversable side effects. Also, you are taking them to help with a medical problem, so they have clear benefits.

Deauville inn is One of my favorite spots when I used to get houses in Avalon. Once I convinced my housemates to cross the bridge they were hooked as well. Need to make a run down there.

i enjoy both in moderation and also workout daily and eat healthy.
The US food system contains a lot of poison and toxins.
Ultra processed foods and crap additives that are not in the foods in other countries does more damage than moderate alcohol consumption. MAHA!

if you haven't been since the new owners took over you need to check it out. 10x better than the original and Sunday's are a blast. The outdoor bar is hopping especially on summer Fridays

Alcohol is not good for the heart in anyway. And alcohol-related cancer cases are increasing now not because of who is drinking today, but rather all the drunks from 20-30 years ago. There is a time lag to all this (same thing with lung cancer and smoking).

Yes, everyone heard how bad alcohol was for you but you see the effects on your health 30-40 years later.

moderate alcohol raises HDL, which may help remove cholesterol deposits. That's not a claim about overall health benefit, just a benefit related to alcohol consumption at certain levels.
