If you have 8 hrs to spend in Chicago what do you do? Good but not overly expensive food is a must. Thanks!

Can't wait for the election to be over. It's every thread from both sides. No topic is immune.

Of course post-election, half the board will gloat for awhile and the other half will be bitter, but it has to end at some point. Right???

If you've never been to Chicago, I'd get two meals of touristy stuff. Chicago dogs, pizza, etc. They're overrated, but every city has nice restaurants with good food.

Edit: Do you enjoy art?
I have not had the chance to visit Chicago yet, but I've been told by people who spend a lot of time there that it's the best city for cutting edge culinary. That being said, in 8 hours it is probably best to stick with the Chicago famous staples.

Oh and it's so surprising that the typical neanderthals chiming in.

The OP asked a legit question and certain posters have to immediately take the thread to the gutter . Give it a break.
It's ok you've got expect that from both sides.. We were starving and never having deep dish pizza we stopped at Ginos. Beer selection is v good, still waiting on the pizza. Well walk down to the pier later and eventually find dinner. Thanks for the advice. It's actually warmer here than it was back east.

Don't forget a Mr. Beef eye-talian sammich.

If not too cold, architectural boat tour is fantastic. Art Institute, big bean, Navy Pier are also cool. Food wise great $$$ steakhouses with Gibsons and Chop House my favorites, but Greek Isles in Greektown, Rosebuds on Rush (I know it's touristy but the sausage and meatballs are quite good), and a million deep dish pizza places are very good. Wiener Circle is a landmark but the Chicago hot dog does not compare to NY IMO. Also, Italian Beef sandwich does not compare to Philly cheesesteak.

I'd get lunch at the top of the Hancock building:

https://www.signatureroom.com/

Food is pretty good, fairly reasonable, and the views are really good. Gets you a decent meal, a great view, and allows you to kill two birds with one stone.

If you figure the price of the views is $8 a person, lunch becomes pretty fairly priced.

Go to Topolobampo. Pricey but worth it.

Yeah, but I recommend eating on the Frontera Grill side (bar) & adjacent room.
Last time I was at Topo it was a limited menu, and you could not order a la carte.
Plus expensive, but it is the best Mexican food I've had, anywhere..

A lot of great suggestions. I would also check out the Diner, Dives and Drive-Ins website for Chicago gems. Chicago is an easily walk-able city and if the weather permits a great way to get a feel for the vibe of the city. It is like a compressed NYC with different neighborhoods. It really is a great city. Enjoy.

This may be my one and only time I eat deep dish pizza. Extremely disappointing... Navy Pier was nice for a stroll and allowed a great view of the skyline. Wish I had more time to wander. I'm in training all week in Elk Grove Village and won't have time to get back there.

Hey Ceru,

Gino's is not my favorite for deep dish, but one has to understand that deep dish is very different from East Coast varieties.

What I would recommend if you get a chance is to take a walk down Michigan to the Art Institute, which has many of the great iconic works of art (Seurat's La Grand Jatte, Picasso's guitar player, and one of my faves, Caillebotte's "Paris Street; Rainy Day"). I would also recommend taking a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's home and the neighborhood homes he built in Oak Park.

Science and Industry is cool, too!

LOL at the idea of this board being split 50/50 politically.
