Ok Guys have my favorite bottle "The Prisoner" lined up for Christmas Eve Angus Prime Rib Dinner, but looking for some nice bottles under $20 for Christmas day Extended Family dinner Lasagna and Spiral sliced Ham are on the Menu.

Need suggestions for Reds and Whites

Looks like we will be in the backyard with the lawn furniture, corn hole and fire pit going......

So, if you like the Prisoner, then try the Locations series wines made by Dave Phinney, the original producer of the Prisoner. Prisoner brand was sold a few years back (not sure if he still has a hand in the production of the Prisoner). Location wines are made from fruit sourced from vineyards all over the world and labeled by the first letter of the country from which the grapes were sourced. The "E" from Espana/Spain should be right up your alley and about $15 at Wegmans. Hope you like it.

Joel Gott cab - deep, dark rich. Like Rodney Strong and J Lohr also. All should be in $15 range.

I just drink Champagne from Christmas right thru New Years day. Light and not filling,. Can mix it with some things to make a punch , or nice drink for the ladies (Cranberry, etc) with a piece of fruit garnish for color and flare, and wonderful right the very next morning to start the day off all over again either as is or mimosa's.

One of our bottles of Champagne (or maybe 2) and then the 2013 A to Z Pinot Noir. We have a bunch of people for Christmas dinner, many of whom wouldn't appreciate something better than the A to Z, and for the price I think it's pretty good.

Plus it doesn't spill when you SIT to pee. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I'm well into my first bottle so I am not tracking your remark.
I have heard Champagne is less calories than white wine too.
And chicks dig it... (no worries..once we get everyone loose we break out the shots of Patron) ...by then I have no idea where and how I am peeing.

If you can stretch your budget to $22 or $23 I would suggest Decoy by Duckhorn.
We're going to give this a try. If it doesn't work out, I'll laugh as I inform the group, "We have PhDKnight to thank for the recommendation." To which they'll respond, "Wait. What? Who?" Then I'll have to cave and confess my participation in ScarletNation. To which they'll once again respond, "Wait. What? Who?"

Great wines for a great price, you should check out Cameron Hughes on the web. The business model is to purchase fine wines form different sources, blends them, and sells them under their own label. You should check out their story. I usually purchase the lot series. I have never had a bad experience, even with varietals that I'm not too fond of. You can sometimes find the wine in retail or Costco. Prices usually run from $12-30 a bottle.

The only problem is that there are a limited number of cases made so when it's gone, it's gone.

With a name like that I am sure he must be an expert :cool2:

One of my favorite memories as a kid on major holiday meals was getting to have a few sips of Andre Cold Duck - and by the time I was maybe 12 or 13, I'd be allowed to drink a whole glass. Probably part of the reason I still love champagne to this day. 1984 - I'll be right over, lol...

Andre Cold Duck and a Monte Carlo cheesesteak was an awesome night in the Quads in Livingston freshman year.

Did you buy the prisoner wine from a NJ store? My friend from Cali raves about that wine. I haven't seen it around here. If so where did you buy it? Thanks.

"Butter" a chardonnay from California's JaM Cellars is under $20. In addition to a fine taste, the company's winemaker is Bob Lloyd's (all time RU basketball player) son, Dick Lloyd's nephew.

Well... we went with the 2014 Decoy Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc. The consensus opinion gave it a strong 7/weak 8 on a 10-best scale. Not bad. We all got a chuckle when the first bottle was "uncorked"--as it was a twist-off metal top. Whaa??? Sure a few wine snobs raised their collective brow at this but enjoyed the wine, nonetheless.

Merry Christmas.

2009 Solaia

It was a little early to open, but we decanted it 90 minutes ahead of dinner.

Yummy! My favorite.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

As someone said earlier, Prisoner was sold a few years ago. Orin Swift still making some great blends. I like Machete and Pappilon.

Thanks I'll have to try them.
Not that they're difficult to find, but when I visit our office in Irvine, CA, the 2 locations of OC Wine Mart (I'm not an owner, investor or relative thereof) always have the full selection of Orin Swift wines. That's where I first "discovered" The Prisoner and Saldo (which also went in the sale to the Prisoner Wine Company).

Swift is known for the odd labels, but the wines stack up.

Wegmans sells The Prisoner wine. A bit pricey at $43 but a great blend

Santa Barbara chardonnay for an appetizer, and Perrier-Jouet & Veuve Cliqout for the toast.

Ha! I do not drink white but my wife likes the Decoy Sauvignon Blanc. I find that many of the bottles of white she brings home are uncorked these days regardless of $. I like the Decoy Cab for the $ myself. As someone else mentioned above I recommend Staggs Leap Artemis if the budget goes up to $40 and change. I popped a bottle of 2011 Duckhorn Cab Franc tonight myself with a roast. I lucked out and picked up a case when a friend in the business in Napa let me in on an insiders sale earlier this year.
