So have been mulling this over the past few nights since we are now running it. Rich Rod is considered the pioneer of the no huddle - run oriented - spread offense with Pat White at WVU.

Would Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Big Ben Roethlisberger ever see the field in college under this offense?

Nope - where are the pro-style Qb's going to come from?

There are about a 1/2 dozen elite Qb's in the league now - what about in 5 years - none. Just dudes running all over the place...should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Not going to blame Rich Rod as Jim Kelly ran an earlier version back in the USFL, maybe not a no huddle offense but still an offense predicated on tempo and throwing the ball all over the field, short quick passes (with longer passes mixed in). I hate it but I'm sure I'll be called old fashion.

Prefer a more strategical game where offenses and defenses match wit, execution and skill as opposed to trying to prevent a defense from getting players in the right position due to tempo and substituting (or lack thereof). Just my 2 cents.

The running QB was really was a response to the growing strenght of the defense. Think bout how the 70s were dominated by the likes of Fauts, Bradshaw, Staubach, Swan, and the like, then Moon, Montana, Aikman, Simms, the two dudes for Washington sitting back and pickings defenses apart: the response? From starting with Buddy Ryan to the early Ravens, you find the biggest, fastest stud, put them on D and go kill the immobile QB.

What happens in the mid 2000s? Bring back the Run and Shoot and add a mobile QB

Then blame Mike Leach at Texas tech too...he was doing it at or before the same time as RR...

Is this the only instance where we can't blame Flood? Maybe a first...we can blame him for not finding all those great pro style qb nobody else wants...

Buddy Ryan called the run & shoot "chuck & duck". Spread offense is gargabe football. No rest for OLine, and no rest for Defense with a 3 and out. No clock management, we should've huddled when we had the lead to burn clock. A good defense will shut it down. Also need 2-3 QBs because QBs in open space get hit harder.

Jim Kelly ran the Run and Shoot. Blame Mouse Davis (the inventor) or June Jones (the guru). In 1991 there were three Run and Shoot teams in the NFL and all made the playoffs (Lions under Wayne Fontes, Oilers under Jack Pardee who coached Kelly with the Houston Gamblers, and Falcons under Jerry Glanville with June Jones as his OC). The reason the Run and Shoot was highly successful in this season is because NFL defenses tried to run their base packages (4-3 or 3-4) against it instead of nickle or dime packages. While the Run and Shoot had a short run in the NFL, many of its concepts have been incorporated in modern offenses.

in college there is such a wide disparity in talent that the spread allows teams to even the playing field a bit. To run the Pro Set you have to have Alabama, Ohio State talent to compete. The good running QB really makes defenses honest. Look at Houston, they have Ward a really good running QB who can throw some, they don't have the talent of Oklahoma but they won. If they played the traditional offense they would not be as successful. There will always be some pure throwers but the wave of the future is the Cam Newton types.

Don't they all run/ran no huddle spread offenses the past few years? Manning was actually stifled in the Kubiak pro offense under center. Brady basically runs a run and shoot offense, and Big Ben is better off throwing 50 times a game out of shotgun.

And with the Offensive minded direction the NFL is headed, those Rich Rod, Marv Levy offenses is going to look like the old Bill Parcells offense.

The Ringer had a really good article about the place of the spread in the NFL and how it effects player developement not only at QB, but on the OL as well. https://theringer.com/nfl-spread-offense-quarterbacks-72148a036561#.6cdmnj1ke .

But the bottom line is that the NFL will adapt, it always does. A lot of teams are moving toward hybrid concepts. The Eagles showed that in their first game and in the pre-season. Doug Pederson ran a lot of West Coast offense routes and terminology mixed in with spread concepts such as run pass options and things like that.

I have thoughts on the topic but I don't want to get banned from Rivals. I reduce this brand of football to "street ball" and nothing more. Both DT's and LB's have been handcuffed on how they hit and tackle a QB. This has emboldened NFL GM's to draft and pay running QB's. If the NFL would back off on roughing the QB penalties, you would see LB's Safeties coming in with high low tackles which would inflict pain, but more importantly make a QB flinch at the idea of running the ball. Why I root for Alabama is not because the win championships, it's because they run a pro set offense.

This isn't a new problem. The 'big time' college QBs have often been a poor match for the NFL, and as such the NFL has never had a problem pulling QBs from lower tier or even IAA/FCS schools...so to answer your question, that's where they will come from. In fact Rothisberger played for a mac school, no?

Maybe the NFL starts a real minor league / developmental league. You know, because the college kids just aren't cutting it any more.

Right.
