OT: Geoff Collins to be named new Temple HC

Haven't been able to post here in the past week. Still getting over the surprise of losing MR. Actually, the destination still bothers me, but they threw a stupid amount of money his way. He's going to earn every penny of it.

I think this hire could be a good one. We'll see. Most of us realize if this guy kicks ass, he'll head back to the SEC. Truth be told, while it would suck, it would also mean that the program is continuin to thrive and I reluctantly if i'm going to lose my head coach to a P5 league, let it arguably be the best one.

FIFY.

Not being a jerk but the sooner you realize the program is a stepping stone for coaches, you are less bound to get hurt. Rhule was lined up for PSU if Franklin failed this year. It's just the breaks. If you hire a guy like Joe Moglia or whatever from CCU than maybe the guy stays for years. It is what it is.

Don't know his personal Intel. I'm getting info just like the rest of you via the net. That's the unfortunate reality of being a G5. Same thing is going to happen with Cincy, USF and Houston again too if their hires are all successful. It sucks because the G5 grooms them and in our case, it's not like we jipped MR. I'd love to earn 2.5, but you can't ignore a 2-3 million dollar a year raise either.

If GC thrives on North Broad and bails for bigger and better things, it'll mean that the TU program is still humming along.

Question for TU fans on this site; was Snow ever considered as HC after MR left? Also don't know much about the hire, does this new HC have east coast ties?

just shows how stupid RU was for promoting Flood back in the day...coming off 2011 and with 2012 team ready to contend...and I liked Pernetti...

The same could be said for Rutgers. Schiano stayed longer than most would but I think if Ash is successful, he'll go to a bigger program. That's just a reality

Yeah. I was gonna post that too. It's one of the reasons the Big Boys generally stay the Big Boys and getting to hang with the Big Boys is so difficult...especially if you're trying to do it for more than a year or two.

Cicero,

New hire has some NE ties, but he's made his mark in the SEC. Has had gigs at Bama and Miss St before Florida. Worked with Rhule way back in the day when they were both getting started.

Phil Snow is a very interesting story. Players wanted him, but I don't think he was/is interested in a HC gig. He thrives extremely well as a DC. I'd hate to see him go, but odds are he's leaving for TX after our bowl game.

Thank you. I thought Snow would have been a good choice.

He is a fantastic coach and the players love him. They'd run through fire for him. He's 60, 61 and I can't imagine him wanting to uproot himself, but I didn't think MR was going to do it either unless it was for an NFL gig. Snow is very tight with Rhule and I'm sure he's trying to convince him to join him. MR better do the right thing and pay the man otherwise I hope we do it and selfishly keep him.

Agreed. Once Ash gets us to 3 bowls in a row, he 's gone.
And I'm fine with that. Means he'll have rebuilt the program and we don't have to buy out anyone's contract. Better that than having to fire him in 3-4 years.

The Day we can pay a coach $4-$5 million dollars is the day this is a destination job not a stepping stone job. 2021 is when that is.

This is the way to look at things. If a coach leaves for a better job or more money, most likely the program the coach is departing from is in okay shape.

And really, the same thing has / can / hopefully will happen to Rutgers. You want your coach to be so successful that others want to hire.

If Ash is successful, we become a bigger program. Look at what happened with just one very good year in the BE. Imagine being successful in the B1G E...

It was tough to lose Rhule. While it was Golden who changed the culture for us, Matt took it to another level. I like today's hire a lot. We'll see if someone comes snooping for his services in 3-4 seasons.

Any word on you guys keeping Snow around yet? Recruiting FL might be difficult...a ton of competition coming up especially with Strong, Frost and Kiffin in the G5 FL schools now.

Snow is going to Baylor with Rhule.

But what's "successful"? 3 bowl games in a row with 7 or 8 win seasons? If ash does better than that he's gone and then we start over with a new coach. Hopefully they'll have the money to pay a real coach by then or else we start all over again. We made the mistake hiring flood and we went backwards

Difference this time is by the time that happens the full B1G payout will be given to us, so they can't cry poor without everyone knowing that they're all full of shit.

that is why I didnt quote the post stating 3 bowls but the quote stating successful. If Ash has 2 bowls at 7-8 wins and then pulls off a 10 win season, that would be successful and we become a big deal. This program is oh so close to taking that next step. If we can get to the point of an Iowa type of program...usually 8 wins or so but every 4 or 5 years in the CCG and discussion for the playoff and every 4-5 years maybe a 5-6 win season...if this program starts to be at that level- it takes off

It's nice that he has the FL contacts and can possibly target a few prospects, but he won't be able to rely on it. As you said, ton of competition down there. I can see USF and UCF have some major recruiting wars.

Anticipating who he targets for his staff. I'm guessing he's going to hire an OC first. Key of course is staffing his support group with guys that know the Northeast. Fran Brown, who was killer for us and was responsible for some of the ringers on the roster, unfortunately took his services to Texas.

Coach Snow is someone I truly wish much success for the remainder of his career. He's staying on to coach the D in our bowl game and he's dealing with his ailing dad in CA. If he stays in Waco long enough, Baylor is going to have one hell of a defense in 3 to 4 seasons.
