this can be one of the greatest stories of all time

Like Babe Ruth and the red sox with Yankees

Giants have the offensive players that would blossom in his offense

No thanks. Kids will "blossom" in this system, however, not while in the NFL.

Babe Ruth was great with the Sox.

Eli is not his kind of QB. If the G-men hire the Chipster, what happens to Manning? Lots of rumors of Chip going to SF and resurrecting Kapaernic's career--his type of mobile QB

Likely never happen. Chip craves full control of player acquisition for "his" system. Giants are just not that type of franchise. IMO they will go after Peyton (if he leaves or is fired from New Orleans) or McAdoo their OC.

It would be great if the Giants hired him and won another super bowl. After the Chiefs win the super bowl this year.

Eli would blossom in that system? I don't think so.

The ONE advantage Kelly could bring to a pro team is his mobile-QB playbook.

That's it.

And in Philly, he scrapped it for one centered around Bradford.

I think early success went to Kelly's head.

He went to the playoffs his first year and in his second he made Foles look amazing.

Now this was a key development for Chip because at this point I believe he thought he could make ANY QB serviceable in his offense, including pocket passers. ie: "If Foles & Sanchez look this good, just imagine what this offense would look like with a bonafide #1 pick (Bradford) under center..."

Or so the logic went.

Then defenses adjusted to his tempo and packaged plays and Kelly simply ran out of tricks.

He should have kept riding the horse that got him there (offense centered on the zone-read). After all, the advantages of having a mobile QB isn't a trick -- it's just math: With the QB as the runner, the offense gains a blocker at the point of attack. The defense must counter by bringing a Safety down or continue to be gashed 5 yards at a time. When that happens, it opens up the play-action passing game. Then the defense is forced back into a 2-deep shell. Then you go back to running the ball. And the cycle continues.

Let's see if he's learned his lesson at his next stop. If it's the 49ers, I would suspect he did.

Chip Kelly would not be a good fit for the Giants. I wouldn't mind seeing David Shaw from Stanford, Greg Schiano and another favorite is Jeff Fisher. In the end, I hope they hire a HC who buys into the culture that won 4 Super Bowls.

terrible idea . . . I spent three seasons here in South Jersey watching Kelly do dumb things. He cannot deal with NFL plays and his hurry-up offense meant that the variety of offensive plays was limited to the point of his plays being easy to spot just by looking at the formation.

It would have worked much better if he had a mobile QB.

As an Eagles fan, I feel cheated that we hired Chip to install the Oregon offense but got something of a compromise built around Bradford.

Chip's selling points may have been the sports science and hurry-up-no-huddle-spread offense, but his secret-sauce was the running QB.

Don't care Giants suck. So this is your entire comeback. What are you like 5 years old. At least try and bring up some facts to support your claim. Here is mine in 168 meetings between the teams, the Giants have won more games than the Eagles. Plus the Giants have been to 5 superbowls winning 4. While the Eagles have been to 2 superbowls and have won exactly NONE. So the Eagles suck worse. But keep trying with your 5 year old comebacks they suit you well. I expect nothing less coming from an Eagles fan.

I appreciate your thoughts, Mike. But after all it was Chip who got Bradford. Was there any reason to think that Bradford, who tore an ACL twice, would be a mobile QB? I also didn't mention that, as you know, the defense and offensive line were both terrible -- thanks to Chip's odd decisions.

I don't think the no-huddle feature worked that well; NFL teams are good enough to adjust to needing to shuffle personnel.

Change the subject to "Giants must fire Reese" and you would have a great point.

I post on so many Eagle boards so I'm not sure if I've already posted my thoughts re: Chip/Bradford:

The first year, he had Vick and had the #1 scoring offense in the league.

Second year, he had Vick/Foles. Broke all kinds of records with Foles and the offense was again near the top of the league. He even had Sanchez moving the ball effectively.

IMO, this was the beginning of the end for Chip.

Because of his success with Foles/Sanchez, I believe Chip experienced some sort of God-complex where he thought his offense was so good he could stick anyone with an arm back there.

The second half last year began Chip's decline as coordinators began implementing tactics to counter tempo and packaged plays.

With another off-season, defenses are now fully caught up.

How did defenses do it? Since 1.) there are only a handful of plays and 2.) Chip doesn't allow audibles, teams would guess Chip's play and create traps for them.

Q: What could have prevented all this?

A: A running QB -- it forces defenses to play assignment football. Combined with tempo, it really makes defenses simple. A mobile QB also gives you a chance to get yardage on broken plays. Instead, the Eagles offense suffered from chronic three-and-outs.

Which doomed the defense causing the whole house of cards to collapse.

Kelly is just more proof that the boutique offenses are flashes in hot pans. They sizzle and they are gone.

If a mobile QB is all that wonderful, then why don't we see more of it? And I am hard-pressed to think of a mobile QB who, for instance, won the Super Bowl. I think the problem is that it is a rare athlete who can be both an outstanding passer and an outstanding runner, and that a mobile QB is more vulnerable to injuries than a traditional QB. Otherwise, Randall Cunningham would be remembered as the greatest QB ever -- and he was one hell of an athlete.

Great idea, fire the guy who was too controlling, and bring in Greg, Who's not
controlling? Who got thrown out of the NFL as far and as quickly as can be.

So far Spags, McAdoo and Adam Gase have been announced for interviews.

You don't see it at the NFL level because few owners want to see their multi-million dollar investment in harm's way (a lot of it guaranteed, when it comes to a QB...).

Folks have no problem with it in college because kids graduate anyway. Not to mention the good teams (OSU,... cough cough) have so many of them riding pine or waiting to sign that some are eventually forced to switch positions.

Cunningham failed at QB because Buddy didn't give two cents about offense and Jaws was a jerk to his understudy.

I think that would be the guy that San Fran just sent packing after one season trying to replace Harbaugh.
GS got two whole years in Tampa....and everybody knows that's more than enough time to have restored the Bucs to their rightful place at the top of the League.

You make a good point. Buddy Ryan called the spread offense "chuck and duck" and once got into a fistfight on the sideline with a fellow assistant who liked that offense. And remember that Rich Kotite was the coach after Ryan, and he was terrible. (Well, Jets fans can tell you that!) Not the coaches I'd want if I were trying to develop an NFL quarterback.

What you say illustrates how difficult it is to use a mobile-QB offense in the NFL. That's why I think Kelly was wrong in trying to use it at the pro level.
