We had a great day and toured the campuses, etc. Our visit was great and my daughter is on the verge of committing (which I would be ecstatic about) but think the prudent thing to do is take her official visits and then make her choice final. She would never want to be in position to go back on her word. I agree with her completely.

I wanted to point out something about our football coaches. We were touring the Hale Center and Coach Wilson came in from practice, saw us and walked up to say hello and welcome us on our visit. A few minutes later Coach Flood came in after today's practice and looked like he was heading to his office. He paused and then turned around and walked right up to us to introduce himself and say hello. I know it might seem trivial, but we were impressed that they recognized that an athlete was here visiting and took the time to come over and say hello and welcome to Rutgers.

My kid visited RU probably over 50 times during her recruitment. She had multiple unofficial and a good official but in the end chose TCNJ. I was hurt for a bit but it is what it is. She said she wanted to blaze her own trail but said she loves Rutgers. One plus of TCNJ is that she is still repping Jersey to the Max.

What sport does she play?

My good friend is the throwing coach at TCNJ. Great school.

I am missing something. Is your daughter an athlete? Can any prospective student wander into the Hale Center and get the red carpet treatment?

For what sport?

Pleased to hear your daughter's visit went well and especially her interaction with Kyle and Wilson and that is what our football staff is all about. This young lady is outstanding and one of the best all around track athletes in the state as well as being among the top 3 academic students in her school. Certainly an ideal athlete and prospective student for the new Honors College and program which would be a full ride and offer the best in academics and on campus housing. Now that's the way to be able to recruit.

Maybe the young lady who went to TCNJ had a better financial aid package there or just felt more comfortable at the school etc. The important thing that I hope she is doing well and enjoying her sport and education.

TCNJ is Div III, so they are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships. The student who selected TCNJ over Rutgers may have received a non-athletic financial aid package at TCNJ, but not athletic aid. Since she was considering a DIII school and Rutgers, I would guess that she was not offered an athletic aid package at Rutgers either. She may have selected a DIII school, since she wouldn't have to compete against scholarship athletes for playing time, or she may have selected TCNJ for non-athletic reasons.

Wasn't your daughter in Sports Illustrated? Maybe "Faces in the Crowd"?

Great to hear all her hard work is paying off and saving Dad a few bucks on college at the same time lol.

Upstream..true but we really don't know for sure and D3 schools all have a way to package aid. And it wouldn't surprise me that there was little or no aid from.Rutgers and TCNJ was less expensive anyway. Rutgers is no longer cheap but compared yo private schools it is a great deal. And some students prefer a small school and not having to bus all over the place. That to me is the one downside at RU.

Very exciting Wisr01 - to have your daughter get this far and be recruited by RU is special and has taken extraordinary effort by her and you I'm sure. Congratulations to all. My daughter also is a rising senior being recruited for her sport and has been contacted by RU and other places - but hearing from RU was an extraordinary highlight for me after multiple decades of following RU FB and BB and all of the non-revenues as well. Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks for sharing this. Time flies. I remember her national high jumping competition experiences that you shared with us before she was even in high school. You have always come across as a classy person, and I am thrilled to hear that she may well be representing RU as a college athlete.

I remember your concerns that all the competition was affecting her physically. I am assuming all that has turned out well, and I wish her continuing success in track and field. She certainly has the competitive personality needed to excel.

Flood truly bleeds RU...saw him at a few wrestling matches this year, and I'm sure he's made appearances at other RU sporting events...

Congrats!! The women's team could use some good recruiting, the BIG is no joke in womens track. I'm guessing your daughter is a HJ, so you must have seen Randall Cunningham's daughter's results this summer. Its pretty crazy how high she is jumping, as a HSer she has a good chance of making the US Olympic team next year.

My daughter went on an official visit to RU for crew and as a former RU runner I could not have been prouder taking the tour of the campus. SHe did not end up at RU but that was a special day for me at least!

My daughter wanted to go to Rutgers very badly, but we could not even reach the coach of her sport when she was trying to get recruited. He ignored all of her emails and phone calls. Apparently, his philosophy is that he can get better athletes from the west coast and southern states. Trust me when I say the team's results don't support that theory.

Her visits to other D1 schools always included meetings with the coaches from other sports (football in some cases, basketball in others, depending on the school's focus). They all represent the schools and their athletic programs very well. It's a huge selling point for most athletes. The school she ended up committing to was the one whose entire community really seemed to support athletics and the individual players.

Yes she was in SI Faces in the Crowd. Good memory.

What sport was that in? My niece is going through a similar experience. She has scholarship offers from others but she never heard from Rutgers even though she was sending e-mails? It's also in a sport Rutgers is God awful in.

She will be a heptathlete who also does some open jumps and throws. For those not familiar, the heptathlon is the women's version of the decathlon.

Here is something interesting regarding Cunningham's daughter, she has finished with the nation's highest season best in the HJ for her age every year she has competed (including youth track) except one year. Who is the only girl to ever finish with a higher season best than Vashti Cunningham?

A bit OT but saw today that Corey Crawford, elite RU long jumper and son of ESPN anchor Jay, was granted a 6th year by the NCAA. Kid has fought a lot of injuries I guess.

Not OT at all. We are HUGE fans of his and are excited that he gets one more season.

Figure out a way to make it happen! We need all the help we can get in other sports!!!

Your daughter is into Tennis if I remember correctly as I remember following her results one time in some kind of big tournament.

Great memory, Wisr01 - yes tennis - a very brutal sport on the USTA circuit - HS is fun - she's been on two state championship teams and a national HS invitational championship team but all that counts for college is USTA tournies - a lonely road filled with home-schooled kids and crazed parents - :)
How did you know her name to follow her in a tournie?

wisr, congratulations to you and your daughter on her track accomplishments. Back in 2008 my daughter was also heavily recruited as a HS track athlete(thrower) and she initially planned to take all of her official visits before committing. She fell in love with the first school she visited and subsequently took only 2 more visits to other schools to confirm that the first school was the school for her. The numerous phone calls from coaches were intriguing at first but soon became a big distraction and nuisance on school nights and so my daughter was eager to end her recruitment sooner than later. The school she selected turned out to be the perfect mix of academics and D1 athletics she was looking for and her throws coach played a big part in the success she experienced in college. ( RU was not an option at the time unfortunately as her event coach was employed on a part time basis and retired before she would have graduated.) As an aside, I will be taking her former throws coach to the PSU game next month.

My cousin's son grew up with Andre Aggasi (sp) in Vegas and had the same coaches. Traveled the Junior circuit with him for a while. Didn't have the skill or $$$ to continue. Heard stories about how tough it is/was for someone without big time backing.

Knight Ed...just a question. What is her HS coach doing to help in the process and does he/she have any relationship or contact with the Rutgers staff on the particular sport involved. Often the coaches at the prep level are an important key in helping their players move on to colleges and to get the real story as to why or why not a player is bring recruited. You might want to follow thru on this and share what her cosch had to say etc. And it could be that Rutgers or any school is involved with better players or doesn't have an open spot. On the other hand the coach at the college level could not be doing a good communication job which certainly is not acceptable.

Right Knightfan - but not just the backing (though it is an expensive endeavor, particularly for out of state travel to tournies - let alone lessons, etc.), but unlike team sports (and other than doubles where you at least have a "teammate", but is unimportant ranking wise) you're out there week after week trying to kick the butts of your "friends" - because you have no teammates and your only compatriots are the other girls in the tournaments that you see and play against week after week. For many of whom, this is their whole life (academics are secondary) and if they don't win they lose a chance for a D1 schollie. Hence, there is a lot of cheating (outside of top national tournies, there are no refs on every court - you call them over to watch once a problem is perceived) and other unpleasantness. Glad my daughter survived and is coming to the last lap.

Great story and awesome to hear about your daughter. Very happy to see there seems to be a gameplan to make athletes feel as welcome as possible whether they play a big revenue sport or not.
