>Johansen died Friday at his home in New York City, Jeff Kilgour, a family spokesperson told The Associated Press. It was revealed in early 2025 that he had stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor.<

"...In the ’80s, Johansen assumed the persona of Buster Poindexter, a pompadour-styled lounge lizard who had a hit with the kitschy party single “Hot, Hot, Hot” in 1987. He also appeared in such movies as “Candy Mountain,” “Let It Ride,” “Married to the Mob” and had a memorable turn as the Ghost of Christmas Past in Bill Murray-led hit “Scrooged.”..."

The Dolls weren't a band I liked but I like Morrisey (The Smiths) and he liked them - used to run a fan club for them.

Definitely had a long and multifaceted career. Think he was battling this for a while. Anyone remember his live Animals medley video that got some play on early MTV?

Oh yeah... it was in heavy rotation in the early years of MTV. It was shot at Tramps in NYC. The Live It Up🍸neon sign is the dead giveaway. Anyone who saw a show at that great club remembers that sign.

Also, Tramps is the place where he came up with his alter ego, Buster Poindexter.

I was a big fan of his solo work, post NY Dolls and pre Buster Poindexter. Saw him several times in concert during those years, great performer.

My favorite piece of David Johansen trivia is in the film Let It Ride, he plays Richard Dreyfuss' friend, and in one scene he is wearing a Bushwood Country Club baseball cap. So, in my head, the film exists in the same universe as Caddyshack and Johansen was a former caddy at Bushwood (how else we he have acquired the cap?).
