Last of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.

The San Francisco punk band, Angst immortalized John Glenn in the song, "Neil Armstrong".

Ed Harris. Between "The Right Stuff" and "Apollo 13", he is the NASA movie MVP.

On that day some 55 years ago,it wasn't a certainty how long Glenn was going to be in orbit. There were some technical issues that had to be resolved during the flight in order for him to get the go ahead for the third orbit. One of the teachers from my school was listening to the news on a TRANSISTOR radio and said excitedly:"He's going for the third orbit."

I posted that Hugh Hefner was dead and he isn't . This one one we know is true. An absolutely wonderful important and kind piece of our history.

Another great act by a great man:

while Connie Chung was interviewing Glenn in 1984,durng the Democratic National convention, a portable microphone strapped on her body began to smoke. A few seconds later, Glenn sprang into action and put the fire out before it got out of control.

She didn't even know she was on fire and smoke was rising from behind Connie's head
