"It includes renaming a walkway Will's Walkway for a slave who helped lay the foundation; renaming a 14-story apartment complex the Sojourner Truth Apartments for the abolitionist who was originally owned by the father of Rutgers' first president; and renaming a library on the Piscataway campus to the James Dickson Carr Library for the school's first African American graduate."

Civilization doesn't need any more reminders of the times when it was less moral than today. Do that in a history class.

Sliding quickly passed the notion that re-naming these structures as this group wants will do nothing to remove the stain nor nothing to advance the disadvantaged…I just hate the idea of ‘giving away’ naming opportunities when we are still trying to catch-up financially. These faculty members should be helping out in securing a passionate donor who cares similarly about the cause to give a gift to rename the structure after those desired.

That would make a lot more business sense.

No discussion of removing the name of the slave holder who bought perpetual naming rights to The University of New Jersey for 300 bucks?

Faculty: "No worries, we'll just raise tuition"

I have no issue with the concept, but find the reality almost a bit silly. The walk one I like, since the person actually had a connection to the place. But in general, if you're going to name something for someone, that person either A. should be a big-ass donor or B. should have done something worthy of being honored that directly affects either the university or the state of New Jersey. No matter how worthy a person Sojourner Truth might be, someone -- of any color -- directly connected to Rutgers or New Jersey is more appropriate.

I would support renaming the library in honor of Carr as the first African American graduate. I don't support the naming of the apartments - we should save that for an important donor opportunity. As far as noting any university ties to slavery, that should be acknowledged with an educational exhibition in the library vs a campus marker. How can we contact the Board of Governors? We would need to send emails tonight.

Wouldn't it be better to name and fund scholarships for African-Americans students rather than putting markers on campus? That seems like a better way to honor any Rutgers ties to slavery.

Excellent post IMHO.

"renaming a 14-story apartment complex the Sojourner Truth Apartments for the abolitionist who was originally owned by the father of Rutgers' first president;

Sojourner Truth was born in 1797.
Hardenburgh's father died in 1786.

Both of these events occured 150 miles away from Rutgers campus, and there is no proof either of them ever set foot in New Jersey.

Luckily, random white dude on the Internet doesn't get to decide the appropiate way to memorialize the unjust suffering of blacks.

Because there are very few slaves whose names are actually known. Most of them lived and died as faceless chattel.

Why is every white dude guilty by association when it comes to slavery? My ancestor's weren't even here when this stuff transpired. They were in Poland and Hungry until the Nazi's kicked the sh*t out of them . Yet somehow because I'm Caucasian I'm guilty of contributing to slavery?

Who are you yelling at, geezer? Nobody said any of those things to you.

But since you brought it up...you as an individual are not guilty of slavery. The United States of America is, however, guilty. Of slavery. Of Jim Crow. Of redlining. The whole ball of wax. You need to accept that and stop whining.

I like this idea. Scholarships named after them actually makes a real world difference that would help people today and for years to come.Giving away naming rights for free doesn't really do anything but cost Rutgers money. Naming the library after the 1st black graduate from Rutgers would be a touching and great gesture that everyone can get behind, IMHO.

I also agree with this. The library would be named after an alumni that blazed a trail, for lack of a better term.

Dedicating scholarships would be forward thinking, which is kind of the point really; we can't change the past, but we can use it to be better going forward. Scholarships would assist in making student's futures better.

Please describe for the class everything that you've done to correct the injustices of the past.

Naming rights for passionate donors? You know we are talking about Rutgers right? This argument is so laughable.

agree with first part, only the second if there is a scholarship for white males that honors the tremendous sacrifice of our forefathers who fought and died to help end slavery.

that said, there is already more than enough scholarships and grants aimed at black students. Enough is enough, like MLK said, keep the chains of the past that hold you down or break free.
