I want to take the kids skiing for 1 overnight. Anyone have suggestions for family friendly accommodations and skiing, maybe snowmobiling for me.

Thanks for help.

Camelback in PA won't compare to VT for skiing, but they do have accommodations on mountain with an indoor waterpark

It's also a lot closer...

how old are the kids and how good are they? how far are you willing to drive? all depends on what you are looking for.

We used to rent a condo at Pico in Vt. A couple of miles from Killington but much less crowded and pretty good skiing. Walk outside right to chair lift.

Another vote for camelback...... Unless they really want to ski the steep stuff

Do they have snow out there yet? I read the stories of resorts opening summer activities over the holidays because they couldn't even make snow. Plenty of resorts out West with good snow, but probably a bit far for a single night, if I'm reading what you wrote correctly.

Somewhere like Camelback is fine for beginners to intermediates. Nice and close, nice off-slope activities for the family (I think there are some outlet shops right near there too).

If they're high intermediates or above, step up to the Catskills. I recall Windham being the best family resort; Hunter is like the Seaside of skiing. I always liked Belleayre, too, which was a cheaper state-run mountain with a nice split set-up for beginners and advanced skiers.

Higher level than that, or if you want more of a picturesque ski vacation, definitely Vermont or upstate NY. Killington is good, but it's rather large for a quick trip and a very popular (crowded) destination. To me it's the cut-off - Killington and south (Stratton, Mt. Snow, a few others) are crowded with NY/Boston folks, but north of there starts to be real Vermont. Stowe is the best all-around resort in VT, imo.

Heard good things about Whiteface (Lake Placid, NY) and Smuggler's Notch, VT for families, but never been so can't confirm.

Your question is too vague

How far do you want to drive? How much money do you want to spend?

Whiteface Mtn in NY kicks a... Tons of snowmobiling (if there is snow). Lake Placid is where you would stay. Lake Placid? Need I say more?

Killington is the best in VT overall in terms of having everything (Pico is 1mile down the street -less lines). Stowe if you want high brow. Sugarbush if you want the real deal in sking.

Good luck

The posts so far in this thread have offered a ton of useful information and pretty much covered NY/PA/VT slopes.

I'll add my following preferences, depending on available time to ski and experience level:

-Short afternoon/evening trip for easy to intermediate riding: Blue Mountain in the Poconos (hopefully going this Sunday)
-One-day or overnight trip for intermediate to very good skiing: Hunter Mountain, NY (went this past Sunday)
-2-3 day weekend of very good to expert skiing: Stratton or Killington, VT (going to latter when March begins)
-4-5 day long weekend or week of mostly expert skiing: Vail Ski Resort, CO (going at end of month)

I haven't been there this year but I have been going to Stratton Mountain in Vermont for years ... That would be my vote

Stowe VT. Hands down biggest and best mountain in the northeast. About 7 hour drive

I always liked Stratton and Okemo for family skiing. Kids did a week of ski school at Stratton at 3 years of age and it took off from there, we skied there annually for years until we started going out West.

Yes, Stratton's great too. Although waaaay more commercial today than back in the day when I was (ahem) skiing more regularly...

Stratton is pretty close, 4hrs. Hunter in NY is pretty god too about 2hrs from North Jeresy

A lot of nice mountains suggested, but the guy is looking for a one night stay...... These places would be a bit of a grind to go back and forth, if seven hours each way.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Sounds like camelback or hunter is the way to go. I also liked the VT idea but just seems too far with the kids. Which has better accommodations , camelback or hunter?

Look at Kaatskill Club at Hunter. Has outdoor heated pool with hot tub with bar and restaurant on site. Snow tubing is a 1 minute walk from there. Hunter is really like 3 different ski areas with Hunter One the beginner area, the front(east) side of the mountain with all different terrain and the West side with some pretty good expert trails. Weekends get crowded so if you can ski on a Friday or on a Monday it won't be as crowded. Not a lot of snowmobiling in the area though. There are alot of good restaurants/bars in the Hunter/Windham/Tannersville area. Have been skiing Hunter the past 20 years and have a ski house right across the street from the entrance so know the area well. There are also a lot of short term rentals on homeaway and vrbo.
