I'm not a big fisherman but a lot of my neighbors are. Stripers are running in epic proportions the last few days and that means lots of neighbors giving out fish. My neighbor said they caught 30 in the first 2 hours today. I counted 100 boats off the beach this morning, thats more than I have seen on a 4th of July weekend by a large margin. Add in a few humpback whales swimming close to shore and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful December.

Anyone on the board catching any? Preferred recipes?

Stripers? I thought this was about Strippers... :flush:

So they're all ignoring the daily limit?

Share that fish with your grandkids, since the oceans will be stripped of fish by the time they're adults, thanks to people like your neighbors.

I took a colloquium about fishery management at SEBS my senior year. It talked about how catch limits and other restrictions help keep populations viable. RU has a few faculty who research that.

Nothing disgusts me more than those idiots exceeding their daily limits on stripers. There needs to be serious enforcement on limits as the best days of striper fishing are already 10+ years behind us. It's only going to get worse with these jamokes over fishing what is already a fishery in serious decline.

You can catch as many as you want. You can only keep two a day. The OP didn't say his neighbors kept all they caught. That being said I've heard that some people are keeping shorts.

He said they were giving fish away. That seems to imply something no?

No. It doesn't imply they are keeping too many. 3 people on board means they can keep 6 fish. I wish I had neighbors like that... All my neighbors here in Hillsborough are MILFs that hang out at some deli...

Simple grill of the striper. Little butter, little lemon, salt & pepper. Outstanding.

PLEASE do not overlook it though.

Newell,
Cut the fillets into strips (like fish sticks). Make beer batter
1. 2/3 cup flour
2. 1 teaspoon salt
3. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4. 1/3 cup beer
5. 1 egg
6. 1 teaspoon oil
Mix 1,2,3
Add 4&5
Add 6
Coat strips with batter and fry in oil
Drink remaining beer (the rest of the case) and enjoy the fish. The fresher the fish the better.

I went out yesterday in Atlantic Highlands. Nothing at all on entire boat. Captain came in early it was so bad. However the Pt Pleasnt Belmar boats reported good catches . The schools are now off Seaside.

They've been all caught out.

Only a few biologists and pretty much nobody else have noticed that low-level predators (stripers and bluefish) as well as high-level predators (sharks and some species of whales) are much more concentrated inshore the last couple of years than in the past - and have connected that fact to a lack of sustaining bait fish in the offshore waters.

Celebrating the current bounty of the littoral zone overlooks the fact that the pelagic zone is now basically a desert.

Awesome video. I'm pissed ... I pulled my boat out last week and wrapped it today. Had some good fishing till then but no whales last week. This is great for December! Jersey fishing can be awesome

Won't be long until these waters are a littoral desert

Btw, if you think striper stocks are in peril, weakfish are even worse. Those fish should be friggin labeled an endangered species. I caught 1 weakie in 25 years of fishing. I watched a Hispanic gentleman catch a bucket full of yearling weakfish in a cast net along with the bunker he was targeting. Fish & Game arrived about 4 hours after he left.

I live in OC too. I was wondering what was going on. I thought it was some type of boat race. They were all over the place

Saw marine police at the boat launch area in Barnegat Light checking catches today. A neighbor out on a party boat last week also said they were boarded and a few summonses for shorts plus a fine for the captain were written.

I'm pretty sure OP is just Al Ristori trying to draw eyes to his articles on NJ.com.

In the meantime, I misread the thread title as well

Went out with my son out of Belmar Saturday after Thanksgiving on the Belmar Princess. Out of 60 or so fishermen only 4 stripers were caught. Capt'n gave up looking for the stripers after awhile and settled for some blues fishing. brought a bunch of them on board. My son got his first blue fish. Put up a great fight and wore him out. Biggest fish he's ever caught.

Sounds like we missed the stripers by about a week.

There is a bonus striper option this year where you can keep one short between 23 - 29 inches I think. Individuals would have to have applied for it, but party boats could sign up for it too. Just have to keep real good records of the sizes and number kept. On the boat I went out on they tagged each fish with a red tag and measured and logged each one.
