Question for next year. Has anyone brought a deep fryer to the parking lots?

Wasn't sure what the restrictions would be. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'll assume for a minute you're serious then the 1st issue would be setting up a deep fryer in a crowded space. It's recommended you need to give them a wide berth (10') which would be impossible in the lots.

I have no idea whether they're permitted but if they are and you do, please let me know what lot you're in. I want to stay as far away as possible.

For the best result, set the deep fryer up under your car, preferably on the side where the gas tank is located. You will never have to worry the oil temp will drop once you start frying.

Well, the same set up CAN be used for seafood boils and such. My primary concern was the open propane flame.

But, hell, thanks for the sarcastic responses. LOL.

BTW, happy to store oil under my car, but only if you park next to me. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Will do. It would have been the most explosive thing we witnessed this season. Not many explosions on the field.
BTW last year prior to Maryland game I did see people deep frying Turkey in the yellow lot. No one stopped them.

Open propane flame and boiling oil????

Think about it. People throwing footballs, kids running around, folks everywhere. Where are you going to use one safely? Do you think anyone is just going to stand by and let you do it right next to them without raising hell?

I did not do it this year but in the past we have used the turkey fryer to cook a turkey at a tailgate...If you know what you are doing I do not see it being any more dangerous that a charcoal grill or some of the 1/2 cut barrels I see people cooking on.

I have two different ones. Let's start off with the assumption if you have one, you know how to use it (Not in close proximity, don't drop frozen or wet stuff in, don't overfill, etc.).

I have an electric one which we plug into a generator and sit on a table, just like if I was frying at home. I usually make sure to turn it off in enough time to cool down to either put under car or in car for when we go in.

Second option is the larger turkey fryer. I also have those. Just make sure when you are cooking, people know it is on and HOT. For that one, I'll usually leave the pot out with the oil to cool down during the game a few feet from the car.

The hardest part is actually transporting the things because I usually use the same oil 3-4 games (extra flavor). I may have had a fryer or two tip over and leak in the truck (thank god for rubber floor mats) which lead to an occasional stopping to right it and clean up some of the mess. this is why now I usually put the fryers in one of the giants clear trash bags in case there is a leak to keep the vehicle clean.

So ultimately, yes they are very doable and there are no restrictions.

Sure Go ahead, its a great idea to bring a deep fryer to a tailgate. What could go wrong?

We deep fry stuff all of the time. Our cooking station usually includes a 2 burner and a 3 burner camp chef stoves with 1 or 2 fry pots going at any one time. The biggest thing is that you have to be smart about what your doing. Keep it out of the middle of the aisles and you should be fine. It's a great way to churn out lots of food rather quickly.
We went through almost 20 pounds of potatoes this week alone. Fresh cut fries are always a crowd favorite.

We had a very small one at our tailgate this past game which was used to make mozzarella sticks. You have to be vigilant about ensuring people keep away from it while the oil is hot. Just like with grills or other heating devices.

yes have used turkey fryer, but now that you mention it...they should not be allowed. with so many people in confined spaces...hot oil will burn someone, probably a kid, sooner rather than later.

Yes, there will be accidents. But the solution is to get better at accident avoidance, not to take away every last potentially dangerous thing. People can be easily burned by grills. We gonna ban them too?

Very timely post....my wife just asked what i wanted for Xmas and if I needed anything for tailgating. Now i know, a fire extinguisher.[roll]

Issue is oil stays hit for a long time and you can't just leave it unattended while you go into the game.

I fry at least once a tailgating season usually twice. The oil is a pain to deal with so I bought an infrared propane fryer a couple years back and it works pretty well. To the plus, is it cool within minutes and it is healthier, to the minus the food can dry out and takes about 2x as long to fry than oil. So I've mostly gone back to oil frying. Some things come out better with it so I still use it on occasion (we add sausage to the cream cheese mixture too).

As far as dealing with used but still good oil, I bought a plastic jug, oddly enough it is an waste motor oil container, to store my recycled oil. It works ok, I wish the lid went on a little tighter, so far no spillage though. I buy the large container of peanut oil from Sam's club so I think once I'm out of new oil I'm going to make that jug my used oil container since the lid goes on better. Now yes you do have to let the oil cool a good bit before poring the oil into a plastic jug.

How do strain your oil? I went with a cone strainer and paper filters. Cheap and very effective as long as your straining hot oil. I have two large pots, my fry pot and a transfer pot. Put the cone in transfer pot, and strain away. Empty/wipe out the fry pot enough, and strain again with a clean filter, Empty/wipe out the transfer pot and strain a 3rd time.

BTW tailgating threads are one of my favorite thing about your board.

I am not out to spoil anyones fun at a tailgate. If deep frying is your thing by all means go ahead. Just be careful. I had a friend many years ago at a Giants tailgate who was deep frying. He was done and starting to put his stuff away. He was moving the pot of hot oil and it tipped over spilled into his boot and literally cook his foot. He suffered 3rd degree burns over 75% of his foot and ankle. He had to go through many skin grafts and operations and his foot is still screwed up.
For me, I love deep frying but I will keep it at the home where I have more control over what is going on around me. In the tailgate environment I would not feel safe with propane and hot oil. Here are some of the factors that you have to deal with in a tailgate environment. 1) confined space 2) unlevel surfaces 3) a pot of very hot oil 4) propane 5) people drinking 6) people cutting through "your" space(happens all the time) 6) kids around who are not necessarily paying attention to where they are. and there are more "non control" situations that make me nervous about using a propane hot oil deep fryer in the tailgate environment. If you feel comfortable that you can do it safely by all means.

No offense intended, but it sounds like your friend wasn't careful enough. That can happen to any of us at any time in any setting.

Any of us could do a quick internet search and quickly find hundreds of instances of accidents using grills, deep-fryers, kitchen appliances, silverware, bathtubs, plastic bags, etc. We can't ban everything to make people safe.

In a tailgating situation, somebody setting up hot oil in an unstable way, or without safeguarding against it being knocked over inadvertently, is not taking proper care either. Which should be dealt with by addressing that specific case (ticket them or make them properly safeguard it, whatever) without punishing all the people who DO take proper care.

Strain the oil? I leave it right in the fryer to gather ahem..."flavor." ;-)

Thanks for the concern Brother. Believe me we are very careful with our setup and disposal procedures. It also helps to have a current Ocean County fire inspector, and former RUFD and current Middlesex County OEM member as a part of our crew.
