OT-Thanks to the Mugrat I'm Still Paranoid About "African" Name RecRUits!

Is there anyone out there like me who was at Rutgers in the 80's when the fake Targum was published on April Fool's day once. They reported that we landed a 7'2 foot center from Nigeria named "Elohssa Sloof Lipra?". Not so sure whether I fell for it but backwards it spelled "April Fool's A**hole".

I still get paranoid over that article. Does anyone else like myself start spelling a given "African" looking (trying not to generalize African names but that was the original joke) backwards before we take any recruiting news on such seriously?

I also remember RU losing a similar 7 footer type from Nigeria a ways back as it was discovered he had played professionally and thus was ineligible.

Boy times R a changin'- now we R landing that elusive center!

Too funny Ash...but I think this kid is legit.. His nickname is "Duke" which may be best if he drops that, wouldn't want him fleeing to Coach K!!

I don't know if it was the same year, but some of the fake headlines were the best. They wouldn't tell you when the MUGRAT (I assume you know what it is) would come out.
The one I really remember was when the lead story was that the administration announced is was moving all the frats from New Brunswick to the Busch campus. I was at Loree? on Douglass at the Targum bin (already knew the story was fake) when a couple of ditzy coeds pick the Targum er Mugrat up. One starts to have a panic attack- said something like 'HOW AM I EVER GONNA GET A BUS UP THERE? Too funny!

There were some really funny fake sports stories I can't remember. I hope Piscataway Mike sees this as he wrote for the Targum sports section-was editor one year I bELieve.

..And you know my 1st masters is from North Carolina? If you remember Jason Williams was supposedly ready to sign with RFU before his Mom forced him on a plane to Raleigh-Durham. Then Duke "found" his cousin a job...

1976 Mugrat issue my freshman year headlines.

1) Phil Sellers declared ineligible. Rutgers forfeits its season.

2) Javelin thrower puts hole in the new Bubble and it deflates

3) Old Queens firebombed, President injured.

My first Mugrat..

photo of a sexy girl in silhouette carrying an oar with a sun-dappled Raritan river behind her.. caption reads: Womens Crew will add adopt the mens crew tradition of swapping tops after the race. (with sports bras they probably do that now... but back then.. not so much)
