two days before the big game my 46 inch HD Toshiba has bitten the big one 5 yrs young and the persistent issue of the green light going on but not the tv is back. Google it and you will see Toshibas are notorius for this. I have unplugged it for two minutes, twelve hrs, the reset trick doesnt work

So looking to go to a 55 inch and see a good sale on a Samsung HD @579, and as well as both a Sony and Samsung UHD tvs for $999. All can be seen on BestBuy.

The question is is UHD worth it, and is this really UHD? I am sure i do not want 3D though.

Advice?

if your next tv only lasts 5 to 6 years then the UHD won't be worth it. Go for the 1080. By the time UHD becomes the standard where the cable companies can send a UHD signal you can move this tv to a 2nd room and buy a cheaper UHD tv then.

Second that.

I'm pissed that nobody is really in the plasma game, anymore. My 55" Panasonic plasma is about 10 years old and still looks amazing.

Agreed. I have a Pioneer Kuro and hope it never dies.

One point about a UHD/4K tv, while broadcast networks aren't going to be showing anything on them in the near future, Netflix and other streaming services are putting out shows in that format. I still wouldn't get one, just pointing it out.

I wish I would have pulled the trigger years ago on a Kuro 50"er. A HOF tv.

Depends how much you want to spend. For the money the Vizio is a great product. 3D and curved sets really aren't worth it, but if you want to go for OLED, go for it. Whatever you get, you will have to get sound bar at minimum. Audio on TVs suck nowadays.

Yep already have the sound bar the toshibas sound system sounded like it was housed in a metal garbage can....with the lid shut.

damn, if today was Thursday, I would've recommended getting on Amazon and priming the shipping!

Amazon got so many tvs to choose from, even open box returned ones for fraction of the cost through Amazon Warehouse Deals

I went through the same back and forth on the the UHD. I pulled the trigger on a 58 Inch VIZIO UHD for 700 black Friday. For me it was well worth upgrading. I was a able to stream a couple 4K movies and its unreal the detail. The same one is going for 750 at Walmart. Netflix will be putting all there shows in 4K very soon. Comcast has a 4K box coming out this year and ROKU has some stuff cooking.

+1 on plasma. Does LG still do them or did they quit, too?

Every year the "best TV picture" seemed to slide to the next best company that hadn't quit plasma yet: Pioneer - Panasonic - Samsung - LG.

I'd say get UHD if you want it. Based on HD prices, those sets might come down another couple hundred bucks over five years. By the time they do, they'll probably have 8K TVs out.

Oh, and Toshiba? Were the Zenith sets all sold out? I thought Toshiba stopped making TVs sometime around 1988.

Make sure it's a SMART TV. So much better for streaming Netflix and Amazon without another device.

plasmas are the best, bought one last year 60" on clearance because they quit making them which is a shame...way better than any LCD (LED are same thing basically)....

I was going to say the exact opposite. Boxes can be cheaper from the start, and it's much easier to replace or upgrade a $50/100 box than an entire TV.

Oled have taken over the picture quality title from plasma. Havent heard much about how they handle the motion blur for action sports. They don't have the 600hz like plasma so no idea how they compare.

The curved 55" lg oled mentioned earlier is really the only semi affordable one coming in around $1400 when on sale.

I agree. I went with a 1080p projector with a Roku. i will be watching the SB on a 120" screen on sunday with great clarity, can move it wherever I want and it cost me far less than the 55" tvs being discussed.

If you buy things at the right time you save a ton of $.

Plasma guy too. Have 2 Vizio 50s side by side. At least 10 years old now. No problems but a blown fuse in one when it was pretty new. The fuse holder needed to be adjusted.

If I were buying today, it would be OLEDs, however, the future is the 4Ks. Just don't know what the quality of the sets is at this time. My new computer is 4K. Gotta have it.

Info was replacing a tv today I would not go 4K yet. The future of 4K TV are oled and HDR capable. Right now those are simply to pricey but like everything will come down in price. Smart tv would not be a priority. They simply aren't as good as the streaming boxes these days.

I bought a Samsung 65 in JS8500 4K for just under $2k. When I was shopping around I saw the LG Oled. Absolutely the best tv image you'll ever see but for $5K, a bit out there for even a 65in screen. Settled on the Samsung. Great picture quality, better than plasma.

I stream straight off my Ipad, with an HDMI jack, maybe low tech, but its fine by me. The trouble now is finding a set that is "in-store". I may need to retreat to the basement where the kids used to play. I have a 57 inch rear projector that is not hd, but gets it done. I am seeing that sets may drop in price after the super bowl. We have two other HDs but they are smaller....or maybe just go out to bar!:beer:[cheers]

Motion blur is non existent for me. The set does need a bit of break in time and should be calibrated. I didn't bother with a professional calibration as there's enough info online for me to get mine to a happy place for my eyes.

I really wanted the 65" but at the time I bought mine the 65 wasnt out yet and they were projecting the price to be somewhere around 6-7k. I got the 55 for around 2100, which was a really good price at the time. It really is an excellent tv. I also agree with the comment about running your tv through some kind of sound system or bar. I have mine going through a full blow 7.1 surround sound system.

question for those buying 4k tvs.... does normal 720p or even 1080p content look like a$$ on a 4k tv?

i remember the early 1080p tvs looked good with HD content but looks terrible with non hd content.

Likely going with the Samsung 55 HD, Best Buy on seems to stock the UHD in stores now which sucks. I Sears has the same samsung model # at $20 less than Best Buy for pick up today. Just need to go take a look at these things now.

Thanks for all the help, any last thoughts?

Check the price on Amazon first

Not sure which Samsung you are getting but BJ's has a Samsung 55 in on sale for $849 for non-members and a cheaper price for members.

I am guessing Costco and Sams Club will have deals too.

This is a tremendous value. I bought the HU9000 4K two years ago for 3K. Both are fantastic TV. Congrats on your purchase.

PC Richard is fantastic, and if you buy from their Carteret store, you only pay 3.5% sales tax.

Costco gives you a free 2 year warranty and has a live 800 number call in number for technical assistance. When I got my Vizio Smart TV, this 800 number was very convenient setting it up.

sounds like he needs it TODAY....but if me, I check out Costco or BJ's...
Yea but if Amazon is cheaper and it's sold by Amazon a lot of these retailers will do a price match. I've done it before at Staples and Best Buy. These days though when I look the brick and mortar will have things at the same price as Amazon more often than the past.
