The hit alone could have killed him, but, what about the Antlers ? Damn lucky is right.
I think it is fake. Deer don't run into trees and they don't run into people, they zig and zag around slow moving objects. But wow what a hit.

When I saw this yesterday ESPN said he got up and eventually finished ahead of 48 other runners. The deer was DQ'd for leaving the course.
Deer run into highway traffic all the time (they don't just wander onto a quiet street then get run down by distracted drivers) why wouldn't they run headstrong past some humans? During the fall rut, the deer are practically intoxicated and do all sorts of stupid stuff.
I had a deer run into the side of my car while I was on my way to work - I didn't even know what happened - just heard a loud thud - only way insurance company knew it was a deer was due to the fur stuck into the passenger side door handle.....

When my job used to be editing high school sports copy, I insisted (only partially as a joke) that cross country is not a sport. Unless you are being chased by a wild animal or an armed person, there is no reason to go running through the woods."
Guess I have to amend that to "or avoiding wild animals."
Of course, I also used to dismiss swimming as what you do only when your boat sinks.

Many years ago I was stopped in traffic heading west on Rt 24 outside Chester Boro, Damn deer ran right into the car. Must have been spooked by something. Fortunately I had the Volvo wagon that day. Only scuffed the paint job a bit. Deer was shook but ran off into the woods.
My car was totalled by the deer.... Drivable (except passeger door didn't open), but totalled.
I know someone who had issues with his ins because they disputed the statement he gave to the police about hitting a deer. Said he lied. Took a long time to settle.
Had one run face first into my left leg while riding my motorcycle a few years ago on a gorgeous afternoon in northwest Jersey. Its momentum carried it over my rear fender and it limped into the woods on the opposite side of the road. Had oil and fur down my left pants leg from that stupid animal. Never dropped the motorcycle thankfully.
