Pat Flaherty intersted in job, but are you interested in Pat Flaherty?

"There is an swell of support for Flaherty in New Jersey high school football community, according to multiple high school coaches. The respected offensive line coach likely ..."

Did they not say the same thing about flood in 2012? We then learned the value of that "support" as the talent fled the sate. Plus he is an o line coach. My feeling is been there and done that.

Would MUCH rather have Steve Spagnuolo if we're going to entertain non-traditional candidates.

I would love to see a blitz-heavy scheme back on the banks.

Having had success with both the Eagles and Giants, he's a recognizable figure walking into living rooms. Not to mention his Super Bowl bling...

Oh come on ... Never been an HC .... never been a coordinator ... sure, if you are a career OL line coach and you are 59 ... YES, you would leap at the prospect of getting a gig for $1+ million per year for a guaranteed 4-5 years - you would not care that you might be getting in waaaay over your head.

"High school coaches support ____." Who gives a crap. Who are the coaches, and why should we care? Do they have any relevant understanding or experience that makes them qualified to assess? They always go with that angle trying to convince people its relevant.

Better than an Ohio State assistant that lost to Kyle Flood.

You keep posting this. I agree that its relevant, but I don't think it is the be all and end all you make it out to be. Rutgers mauled UNC in the bowl game last year, with I believe the same coaching staff that has them sitting at 11-1 this year. Rutgers wins against Arkansas were the result of a lot of things.

I think the "support" of local coaches argument is so overwhelmingly overrated.

don't careabout local coaches - i care about north jersey parochial school coaches and not some guy from montgomery that is quoted

He then joined the Penn State coaching staff from 1982-1993 as an assistant under offensive line coach Dick Anderson. There he helped the Nittany Lions win the 1982 National Championship with a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia. When Anderson left to become head coach at Rutgers prior to the 1984 season, Flaherty joined him on the Scarlet Knights' staff, where he remained through the 1991 season.

Can he bring Anderson with him?

Quote from the Giants player:

He’s constantly teaching us. And ‘Flats’ knows as much about defenses as he does about offenses, which is something a lot of guys aren’t used to. He understands safeties, coverages, schemes and exactly how defensive guys are going to play us.

So we’re not just studying fronts. We understand the concepts of why they’re doing what they’re doing. That alone makes us better offensive linemen than other guys.

I don't think comparing Pat to any other OL coach is relevant. He has solid HS coaching ties from all the camps he's run for them. Most linemen know defensive football and he obviously does. Might be a good hire.

Yeah, a pro coach getting in way over his head at the college level. I think he might be able to make that leap.

No thanks.... he's been in the NFL for far too long and away from college and high school recruits. It's nice that the HS coaches like him but like others said, that is not moving players to RU.
Maybe i'm off base here a bit but seems like if you are an older coach you better have young guns recruiting who are on FB, Twitter, texting and playing Xbox in order to relate to recruits. Being in the NFL for years can he get those young guns to coach and recruit? Now there are some proven older coaches like UM, Saban etc... who can just show up in order to sway recruits...plus having the young guns helps.
That's why I like Ash and some of the other names who are a bit more tied in to what HS players are up to nowadays.

It's such newspaper non-sense.

"There is an swell of support for Flaherty in New Jersey high school football community, according to multiple high school coaches."

basically amounts to

We talked to 2 or 3 High School coaches who answered our calls quickly enough to get the article out, and none had anything bad to say about Flaherty.

They're just trying to stir the pot and get the guys name out there to create a story out of nothing. If a newspaper calls a hs coach, and the coach is a pro, of course he's going to give a few cliches and platitudes about the guy. But as pointed out the same basic narrative was applied to Flood and the top talent continues to flee the state.

facts:

Flaherty spent the 1992 season coaching the defensive line at East Carolina. From 1993-98 he was on the staff at Wake Forest, where he coached the offensive line, tight ends and special teams. In 1999, he coached tight ends and special teams and was in charge of recruiting at the University of Iowa.

Flaherty joined the Giants in 2004.

He is currently the Offensive line coach for the New York Giants of the National Football League.

Considering we are not going to get a legit HC that is a proven winner that has not been run out of town where they had been coaching I would say why not.
We cannot even afford a top notch coordinator for a head coach even if we could find one to come here.
I can't imagine his asking price would be to high which would leave some extra money on the table for a decent DC and OC.

Fedora hired Gene Chizik to be his DC - that was a critical hire for UNC and it's reflected in this year's record.

While it is nice that the NJ high school coaches endorse him, I wonder if 17 and 18 year old kids will be excited by the possibility of playing for him. I can't really see it.

I care not about a referral/recommendation put forth by the SL/nj.com people.

When NJ High School coaches do more than endorse a coach I will listen. Toal, Hansen etc..endorse but do not speak highly of the program or encourage enough of their players to give RU a real consideration. When they start sending players to RU with a little more consistency than RU will listen.

I'm going to blow my top if we don't get someone with coordinator experience.

We need stability on at least one side of the ball.

How'd that work out for UConn?

Hartford Courant
Paul Pasqualoni Takes Over UConn Football Program
"With many of the state's high school coaches grinning ear to ear and some serious UConn brass flanked to his right, Paul Pasqualoni came back home, where he will coach the state's flagship program."

Is this a joke? If Shays thinks it's a good idea you know it's crazy.

So why does the Giants OL suck?
