Paul Mulcahy better be the second coming of Gordon Hayward

Paul's challenge is going to be quickness. He looks smooth, but not quick. This is Div 1 time and its not clear to me he will have a big immediate impact. Hope I'm wrong.

For some reason, the name Steve Blake just popped into my head. He didn’t score a lot, but made Maryland go from day 1 of his college career and allowed Juan Dixon to focus on scoring.

The combo worked as they won the national title. Naturally, both were All-ACC players, so that’s not a reasonable expectation. It does seem we need someone- whether Geo, McConnell, Mathis or Harper to get to 15 ppg type of scoring to get to middle of Big Ten pack. All have shown flashes.

Mulcahy is a PG first and foremost. He sees play develop and will put the ball where it needs to be and designed to be. He doesn;t need to score double digits. He just needs to distribute the ball to the others (Geo; Eugene; Myles etc) who will / can score. He'll protect the ball - which was an atrocity tonight.

I like Mulcahy a lot but Blake was WAY quicker...and a better shooter too.

I like PM, but the problem is he gives you another kid who's going to get beat off the dribble, another reason to play zone. Are you really going to have Paul fighting over screens trying to cover a 6'2" quick kid? If you don't play some zone then get used to more of what you saw defensively tonight, and us continuing to be a bottom feeder.

I don’t know why we don’t hedge when we cover the screen. I guess the hedger is too slow to pop out and then return?

Actually we don’t. We need someone who can take care of the ball for 20 + minutes a game and set other players up. This will take the PG load off Geo and hopefully we don’t see the type of stat clunkers we’ve seen from him the past 3-4 games.

Bingo....!!

There's a lot of raw emotion which is good to see and there are a lot of wild assumptions that things will be better because there will be better PG play??

I can watch 30 games between tonight and Sunday and 28 out of the 30 games will have a mobile big or PF that can hedge on a screen, run and jump to rebound or potentially be a shot blocker.

This roster is not complete, it's been maxed out well beyond where it could be.

i am wondering if there is a transfer out...could you see that? just wondering

Do you have another comparison? It’s hard for me to gauge Mulcahy’s quickness on film because he’s a man among boys. I think he may be quicker than most are giving him credit for, at least offensively.

Lamarr Greer is another name- NJ kid who played PG for FSU in mid 90s. Took over the reigns for Charlie Ward and was a big guy at PG - 6’5” - solid college player- though never the star on some teams with NBA players.

Uhm how so? You guard the three but you are our primary ball handler, not a tough concept to understand.

He’s big for a PG but small for a 3. So now you have two spots screwed up defensively, instead of potentially one. You also have your “PG” defending closer to the basket, resulting in fewer fast break opportunities going the other way because outlet passes are that much closer. Maybe this is ok if you want to walk the ball up the court, but if your style is play 9-10 guys and you have guys like Harper and Mathis, we’d be better served getting them going in transition at times for some easy scores. If the break isn’t there, then you move into half court sets and get Eugene/ Myles going.

Good defense is as much a matter of effort and attitude as athletic ability, which he does have. Would he struggle guarding Carson Edwards or Cassius Winston? No doubt- but who doesn’t?

I’d just much rather work with the kid on his defense than try to mask it over in man to man “schematically”. If it’s that bad then going to zone on occasion might be a better option.

So then you would have Baker or Young guard a two or three? Ok, because some combination of those two will probably be on the court too.

Caleb guard the three better? Harper and Mathis, Ok probably.

Baker and Young play 1/2. Small lineup is Mathis at 3 but we also have Harper/Caleb/Eugene who are better suited for minutes there.

Most teams are playing 3 guards. So, 80% of the time he will be guarding a guard next year.

To me, the unknown with Mulcahy is how he will handle on- ball pressure by opposing guards. What he faced in HS is NO WHERE near what it will be like at the next level.

Exactly, a lot of three guard rotations and not many post up 3s anymore.
