Pelzman: New Mexico a must-win for Rutgers football

Yes, Mr. Obvious .
The prospect of going 2-10 or 3-9 is never a good thing.

Very simple answer - NO. There are no must wins this season, period. This is the first year of a total rebuild by a new coaching staff. The coach is under no pressure to make a bowl game this year, the idea of six wins with this schedule, a new HC, and the level of talent on the team is a fan's fantasy. This is another building block in a process, hopefully Rutgers wins, but if we don't we take the lessons learned and move on to next week. Three years down the road when the coach has experience and a lot of his own players, different scenario, but not this Saturday, nowhere near a must win.

Bullcrap. Why don't you set the bar a little lower?

We're allowed to expect to beat an average Group of 5 team on our home field. Hell, New Mexico State did. Eddie Jordan and Kyle Flood would still be employed if you had your druthers.

We blast Howard and all of a sudden we should have expectations of winning and going to a bowl this year.

Yeah you guys you're right Pelzman shoulda wrote about how our coach was unprepared on the sidelines the team wasn't prepared and lucky to come away with a win against Howard. A team that should not even be competitive against us. Then go into Floods ineptitude the embarrassment of the JH hiring and and players waiting or trail for home invasion charges.
Great article compared to any of the aforementioned above, certainly better than a lotta the drivel we had last year

Must win,to retain Recruits, which is the biggest concern, not the overall won loss? YES.

to get to "4 or 5 wins" ..this would be one of the possible 'win "games

Must win or else you will only have 3 wins instead of four, just rings kind of empty to me. Of course we all want to win. But its not a must win. We are at the bottom either way. We aren't going to move up or down much in the world of CFB depending on the outcome of this game.

should a bowl game be expected? No. Should a bowl game be out of the question? No
Based on actually watching teams play there is no reason we shouldn't be able to compete with and beat
New Mexico, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, PSU, and Maryland.

Were you just listening the conversation I had with a colleague in my office? LOL.
Will RU win all of those games? Maybe, maybe not. Are those our most winnable games? Yup. Will fans continue to fret over our deficiencies while ignoring those of our future opponents and while lauding their strengths? Of course, but almost every fan base has a segment does that, while another segment thinks the opposite way. I think that is why we are here.

I would like to agree, however recruiting will fall off if we go 2-10 and 3-9 in his first two years. I agree with you that this takes time, i am concerned however that today's recruits aren't as patient as we need them to be.

I've been saying this ^^^^^ for a decade now. Never saw anything like it. Of course they justify it by saying "I'm a realist" or some other crap like that.
No offense, but that is a rather ignorant position to take. If you label this a "must" win, what are you going to do if we lose, come on this board and demand another head coaching change; demand that Ash three games into his regime change his plans, style of play, fire coaches; burn your season tickets; and/or create such a negative atmosphere on this board that any recruit that happens to come here wants nothing to do with this fan base? It is absolutely absurd that we have fans that are labeling games "must" wins this early in a rebuilding process. It creates unreasonable expectations which leads to disappointment and needless hand ringing by a small % but vocal portion of the fan base. Enough, enjoy the game, hopefully we win, but if we lose all is not lost, it is simply not a "must" win game.

Considering that Rutgers doesn't have a single guaranteed win left on this year's schedule, I agree that beating New Mexico is a must. The problem is that I don't think we will.

Well, nobody would read an article saying "Rutgers Game against UNM is a MAY Win Game"

How about Definition #4?

None taken but to say there's not a segment here who fit the description is a bit naïve IMO. Otherwise we're in agreement.

I never take one game and decide anything. I just enjoy the experience. Of course I'd like to win as much as anyone but I'll never give up hoping next week will be better.

some pretty low expectations by some of our fans

We should expect to win, we do not have a team devoid of talent and we are NOT in the Shea or early Greg era

So are you gonna do that thing where you skewer Ash mercilessly while we're losing and then disappear completely when we turn it around and win the game by five touchdowns?

Cause that made ya look smart.
