Penn St has a new coach

Chambers finally started having success because he did well in Philly with his connections (specifically Roman Catholic kids).

This looks like a good hire (for them) but if he doesn’t recruit well they’re stay at the bottom of the conference.

Seems like a really good hire... if PSU were a mid-major. Guy has no head coaching experience. Sorry, but if you're a P5 program, you need to be hiring somebody with HC'ing experience.
I agree . We even hired someone with HC success and experience

In what world is this a good hire? No head coaching experience? PSU goes cheap. Great for RU!!!

I thought it was a good hire.

Experienced assistant who has worked under some big coaching names.

They might get lucky with this guy being able to take a step up, or it will backfire if the guy is more career assistant-level material. I assume they'll give him some time to see what he can do in crappy valley.

Not a terribly impressive hire, but as someone said coaches are always a bit of a crapshoot.

By my reckoning, 4 existing B1G coaches did not have head coaching experience before being hired into their current jobs. Both Izzo and Gard were long time assistants that took over for long time coaches who were retiring (Heathcote and Ryan). Chris Collins was a longtime assistant to Coach K and Juwan Howard is a completely different animal as a long time NBA player coming back to his alma mater after a stint as an NBA assistant.

Painter and Little Ricky had just a year of head coaching experience each with Painter winning the Missouri Valley Coach of the year in his one year at the helm of Southern Illinois. Of course Minnesota was hoping Little Ricky would turn into his father after just one year as head coach for FIU (he was named B1G coach of the year in 2017).

Seems strange to me that Penn St would go this route, but Shrewsberry does have good mentors in Painter and Stevens. I am happy to see Penn St bungle this one if that is how it plays out.

He must of killed the interview ala Chris Ash.

because of the issues with Chambers it was very likely that they were going to hire a black coach this go around. That they hired him so quickly leads me to believe this was a decision a long time in the making

DePaul and Fordham looking for new coaches. Didn’t realize Fordham hasn’t made the NCAAs in 29 years.

Define "experienced", In basketball and especially in D1 Power 5/6/7 basketball you take a PROVEN winner.

It means what I said - he's an experienced assistant who has spent a time under Brad Stevens and Matt Painter. Please don't take my statement out of context to make a different point.

It's not like assistant coaches moving up at the Power 5 level haven't worked out before - See: Jamie Dixon, Chris Collins.

"Micah rose quickly to the top of what I considered to be a very deep and talented pool."

Penn State has the same attitude about basketball that we had under Mulcahy and Pernetti
One day that will change (like in some of their other sports) and then it will be a problem...for us.

I would much rather take chances with real experience, a proven winner as a head coach.

But it also means Greg Schiano was even a better hire the second time! Fred Hill, Chris Ash much?

He got tired of the abuse he was getting from the board.. that's what the mods said some time ago.
He was also being asked to tone down the number of threads he was starting and didn't take that too well. (From what was also reported).

I have ZERO insight but I would guess the "tone down the number of threads" was specific to ever posting every random Rutgers item for sale across the world.

Completely assured ignorance with a dollop of casual racism - the internet at its finest!
