Pet-ah King mocks Rutgers

We have to win. We have to stop embarrassing ourselves. Then the media will stop taking shots at us. Be patient.

With the Ash and Hobbs hire, we are well on our way. A new BB coach, and we good.

This.

Respect isn't given. It's earned.

Writes King:

"Rutgers. Big Ten? I never got it. Just a dumb, over-reaching move by a conference begging for wider acceptance. And I lived in Jersey for 24 years—and love the place. But Rutgers in a league with Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State? Absurd. Nobody in New York City cares about Rutgers. Nobody."

Zap, he lives in Monclair. Should you run into him, please enlighten him.

He knows what's coming. Success. Like most sports media beotches, it doesn't fit his traditional narrative. Rutgers is supposed to suck, so he continues to feed the story line.

This is going to be the default perception of a lot of old school people (Francesa comes to mind, too). You can moan about it, bicker about a few ratings, or you can focus on the root of the problem and work to change it. and yes, I used to think that the respectable results of Schiano's era would have alleviated that kind perception, but it wasn't enough.

If Rutgers got good enough to compete with the established powers every time, I'm sure sports fans in NYC would get more excited, at least enough to make a dent into the media bubble.

need to win bottom line...football has been addressed and is finally positioned with a guy who knows what he is doing and Hobbs must know address the deplorable and joke of the week hoops program, first by removing Jordan and then by building the practice facility

doubtful. You are giving the media too much credit. Will winning help? of course but I doubt if you asked King he would even know/remember two seasons ago we beat Michigan and crushed UNC. Many of these older writers are stuck in tradition mode and don't pay attention to the year to year results.

This line of thought embraces the idea that teams that are good will always remain so, and those that are not will remain bad forever

Things like this could have been said about a Miami, a Virginia Tech, etc, but who have had their days in the sun, and then falls from there....... these teams, along with many others, show that possibilities exist

Some programs are continually good while others fluctuate.....

As someone said, he was a huge RU supporter during the Schiano success in mid-late 2000s.

I agree, it shouldn't be year to year mode, but we haven't done much in 5+ years. When we turn it around with Ash, the media will be on our side. I've been saying this for years.

We had a terrible couple of years with Flood/Hermann. People, especially the media, don't forget this.

Two years ago we won three road games where we were double digit dogs..... We took several beatings yes, but the year was not a total disaster...... When you win three games that way is is tough to say we totally under achieved

Peter King is sooo much smarter than Jim Delaney .. NOT.

PS- King used to live in Montclair.

I get it, but that season warranted a QuickLane Bowl trip. Not exactly big time. Not exactly something a national writer will remember.

Our head coach admitted as much...our program was in shamble when he came here, so much that some assistants almost passed on the offers...we will turn it around, hopefully quickly.

Understood, but my point was that the season wound up 8-5, with three upset underdog road wins and a minor underdog bowl win

You don't call a program a total disaster in such a situation, unless one only looks at the most recent season.....

But I understand that we being RU are an easy target....

I get your point as well. But when our own COACH admitted our program was a "total disaster"...there's probably more to it that fans don't see.

It's not only about on-field results

Dude was Never in Rutgers corner. He's always been in Schiano's corner. And only in greg's corner because he slurps Belecheck at every opportunity.

So, I like you guys...I like hanging out here, you're active, have good topics and conversations...

That being said, Rutgers is going to get questioned if they belong. Sorry. We know why they're in the B1G, and it's not for athletic accomplishments to this point. You're going to have to grow thick skin about it until either football or basketball turns it around. You can't go combined 7-45 over two athletic calendar years in the money sports and then wonder why national reporters would write this.

Only three other programs have less than 20 combined wins in football and basketball over the past two seasons: Illinois (19), Penn State (17) and Minnesota (15).

Very fair point, but he can't drop a grenade like that and expect not to get some people riled up.

This was always a long-term play by Delany and the presidents. I expected a little bit better than 7-45 but only the most delusional here expected a lot better.

Yes, it was a long term play and accomplished a short term goal as well getting BTN access to new markets. Still, it's going to be seen as a cash grab by most.

Wow. Penn State sucks!!![roll]

I wonder if Purdue grads state that Purdue doesn't belong in the Big Ten. Or Northwestern grads; or Minnesota grads; or Illinois grads? Rutgers has far more upside than all of those school. Money is the name of the game and Rutgers made the best move of any school changing conferences in the country.

It is just a matter now of getting the right administrators; facilities and coaches and in my opinion Hobbs and Ash were a great start.

Pretty sure he's as relevant as he's ever been. His MMQB columns are very successful.

"But for those interested in sports media the rapid decline of SI's newstand sales -- down 56% since 2007, the year Bleacher Report was founded -- and the loss of Turner/CNN as a major backer raises an interesting question, how long will the SI magazine exist in print form and can SI survive as a major force in today's market? "

SI's descent has been a slow slide, preciptated by difficulty leaving behind print dollars to chase Internet dimes.

Just a tired old writer taking the lazy path to fleshing out the tail end of a column - needed some filler & took easy way to finish it up - this was just a low-value / trite bunch of broad generalization no real substance verbiage that filled space.

Although the overall readership has gone down since they were jettisoned by CNN.com.

Completely agree with this - he did no research in writing that little shot at us.

Yeah this is featured on the UConn boneyard as another reason they should be in the B1G ''instead'' of us....after barely a decade playing major CFB and recent 'too me'' Yankee Conference competition....some of their fans are reasonable but many very bitter at the wrong people...with out us in the B1G their not even a consideration though by now they have a shot if CR starts up again...The Big 12 would help them now but might be a longer term disaster...look at WVU...unhappy and isolated..

It wasn't enough, but we also haven't made a ounce of forward progress since Schiano left, actually we've slid backwards a bit.

I think his MMQB columns are only online...he has nothing to do with the magazine anymore.

Fortunately, the Boneyard is even less relevant than Peter.
