Phil Sellers gofundme

Very sad and a worthy go fund me. Remember how Gettys started one to get his luggage home from England or something like that? 🤣

What am I missing here?

Why is there a gofundme?

WHY ISN'T RUTGERS FUNDING THIS?
"WHY ISN'T RUTGERS FUNDING THIS?"

If ever there was a chance that this could happen, it should happen. At the very least, the entire Athletic Department should be passing around a hat the size of Texas and telling people to donate something/anything they can. This fellow IS Mount Rushmore. GO PHIL! GO RU!

This is gut wrenching, our GOAT shouldn’t have to rely on the kindness of strangers. Hobbs, Pike, Holloway should all be stepping up here. Until then, donating and sharing this with as many RU folks as I can.

I see Dicky V is the largest donor thus far, while he battles his own issues.

Donated.

I'll add a heads up. Phil apparently had some financial issues that prevented it, but if you can afford it Medigap insurance, especially early (ages 65-70) is a bargain. My mother had the same intestinal perforation issue, though not the other complications Phil had. The Medigap payments significantly exceeded her total premium payments from then until she passed 11 years later. And it provided coverage for a WHOLE lot in those intervening years.

My dad had Medigap for years before passing last fall. Very much worth it.

Donated. EVERYONE who can, should! Phil and his Teams kept RU athletics afloat until a very few others and B1G $$$ came to be. Please help Phil. GO RU! GO Phil!!!!

Great job by Politi and nj.com to create awareness of this GoFundMe page. I hope they reach their goal or at least hit 6 figures. Definitely cool to see many recognizable names from this board on the donor list.

Robin James - $500 - Awesome

I don't know the protocol, but could this site prominently feature some information and encouragement to donate?

If you want to donate go the site and click on "DONATE". You'll get walked though the process.

True. Perhaps I should have made my post more to the point of publicizing on this site Phil's situation. I have already donated.

Thanks for posting this.. For me, a donation to Phil's cause is well warranted. And here in AZ you don't get to see articles from NJ.com so I wouldn't have known about this had it not been posted here. Much appreciation to the OP, and much appreciation to Phil Sellers for all the thrills. My hopes and prayers are for a full and speedy recovery.

I just posted the following on LinkedIn, because I do not have much of a social media presence otherwise:

Dear Friends, One of the thrills of my life was being able to watch Phil Sellers play basketball during my 4 years at Rutgers. He is the G.O.A.T. of Rutgers Basketball and perhaps the most important figure in Rutgers athletics history. Phil has had some serious health issues lately and could use some help with his bills. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to consider helping Phil recover financially through the link below. I would also encourage you to check out Phil's history if you would. Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger/ nj.com has recently penned a nice article on Phil. Phil was, no, is, the best!! Get better, Phil! Thank you all for your time. Sincerely, runrutgersrun

You can see the donors on the GoFundMe site. Familiar names abound:

Perry, James, Weiler, Hefele, Dadika, Vitale, Dabney, Rebholz, Remley, Jordan, Madlinger, Palko, Lesniak, Scherer, Bannon...

Hopefully, some (or all!) of those names and all the other donors, named and unnamed, will bring a smile to Phil's face and strength to his heart. Keep on RU Nation, one of our best needs a little help!!! GO RU! GO Phill!!!!

I always wished that Phil had more of the post-Rutgers success that Dick Vitale had/has enjoyed. Quite a story, the relationship between Vitale and Phil. When I think of the world now, just imagine how much NIL money Phil would have commanded coming out of high school and starting his college career!! He was THAT big of a deal coming out of high school. Phil's story would make a pretty good movie. A lot of tough times in there. As brash as he seemed at times as a young man, he always seemed to have some insecurities. Later, he never seemed to just throw in the towel or complain about things when he wasn't the star any longer. Great, great college basketball player that I don't feel was ever fully appreciated, even by Rutgers fans. A kid from a really tough neighborhood and childhood...he came to a school with no previous stars of his magnitude, no road map of how to behave. Yet there were never any reports of him being difficult, no scandalous or crazy behavior. After Rutgers, he just seemed to become part of the working world, he never became consumed by drinking or drugs because his basketball career didn't last. I would never tell people how to spend their money - but I would ask anyone, especially the younger fans, to consider helping Phil out right now. He WAS the Pandemonium in New Brunswick--1976 was magnificent!! On a given day, I can make a pretty good case, that Phil is the Godfather, Grandfather and Greatest Individual of All Rutgers sports history. For Scarlet Nation, this is a great opportunity for us to show our colors and help one of our own when we seem to be needed the most. Thank you for listening to this dinner-time bump! Sorry for such a lengthy bump...always have had a little trouble keeping things short when talking Sellers. GO RU! GO PHIL!

An early morning bump! I usually don't advocate reading Star-Ledger/nj.com articles anymore, but if you need just that little bit of extra incentive to help out to Phil through your keyboard and donate, I have to admit Politi outdid himself with his recent Phil article. Even if you just read the final paragraph:

"Sellers once elevated the entire university when he proved Rutgers could reach the highest level of college sports. Now, it’s up to Rutgers to give him a much-needed lift."

Truer words have never been spoken by the Star-Ledger/nj.com 🙂!

Go Scarlet Nation! Go RU! Go Phil!

Couldn't agree more and it helped a great deal with my mother as well before she passed away. I believe she received a discounted rate for the Medigap insurance through AARP.
