Pikiell's Offense ?

Anyone know ?

I have not seen any Stony Brook games.

He seems to adjust it depending on his players. So when they had Warney, they fed the big man. When Dougher was their star, they were more of an inside out team to get Dougher open looks.

Phil Jackson is nearby and the triangle offense could be taught during the summer. Now all we need is the players from the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Motion offense with a lot of pick and roll. Usually enter the post on the weak side after a ball reversal. Guys are allowed to play though. If you are open, shoot. If you have a lane, take it to the basket. Very few set plays except for out of bounds. His teams ran when they could, but with Warney I'd say they got 90% of the offense in the half court - not a ton of transition. I actually think his offense will work better at Rutgers than it did at Stony Brook. He give a lot of freedom but at a lower level his guys were a bit limited in how good they could be. With better players given the same parameters I think they should flourish.

I would assume, being a Calhoun guy, he ran motion at SBU. Not sure he had bigs there so probably 4 out 1 in at SBU. 3 out 2 in here is my guess.

What I think we'll see is good floor spacing, sound cutting and good screens. Pikiell is good. He'll coach these kids. I liked Rice as an HC but some guys never became "sound" under him. I think 1-9 or hopefully 1-10 we'll see well schooled kids.

Hope the twins come here. Pikiell and the situation here seem a good fit for them.

In a review of 28 games from 11/14/2015 to 02/27/2016, Stony Brook had:

  • 2,222 possessions (14.8%)
  • 1,894 were overall half court possessions (85.2%)
  • 328 were transition possessions

It looked like they used the flex offense at times, with lots of down screens and flex screens away from the ball. Carson Puriefoy was excellent using these and Bryan Sekunda was pretty good as well.

Stony Brook was not as effective in pick in roll situations, in fact I’d say they were somewhere between poor and average with P&R. They only made 34-of-118 FG attempts when they ran P&R.

Obviously Jameel Warney was excellent in post up situations, in fact post ups accounted for 44.9% of his possessions, 21.3% were put backs and 18.8% were cuts to the basket.

Coach Pikiell may look to run more at Rutgers due to having better athletes than at Stony Brook¸ but when Rutgers is in half court sets, I’d expect to see lots of motion and screens away from the ball.
