I found this quote from Flood from the Friday Notebook a little surprising and quite revealing.
"We probably would have done a little more live work today if Kaiwan was in full pads," Flood acknowledged. "But I didn't want him to miss another day of team periods. So two of the three team periods we did today were thud [tempo]. And that allows him to play."
The surprising part is that he adjusted the team to Kaiwan. Maybe it's not a big deal but clearly Flood sees him as a big part and wants him to keep up with the training/development progression. The revealing part is how quickly Flood and the coaches are moving through this training/development progression and the revelation that when Flood says 7-10 days, he most likely really means it. I am not as familiar with how these camps work, believe it was 22 session - not sure. Clearly, they are preparation on steroids and the ones who can absorb it all mentally, play physically at peak the whole way, will win the competitions and move on. I am rooting for Retting for two reasons, he looks nice on paper, and Laviano disappointed me when he got a chance. I am rooting for Laviano to prove me wrong because he looks more like a Jersey guy (Retting has the Cali surfer look) and he is the underdog non-4 star that Rutgers is built on. Either one would be fine for me. Regardless, of who wins, it's clear to me Flood will go "all in" with the winner. This may disappoint some and I'm sure the media will push the Rutgers QB controversy but I hope this will put us in the best position to win. I like it.
