He was asked about the Big Ten during a recent town hall meeting:

Rutgers entering the Big Ten and the introduction of the new Honors College are other accomplishments new to the University, he said.

Students also had questions concerning Rutgers entering the Big Ten.

Evan Covello, a School of Arts and Sciences sophomore, wanted to know if Rutgers' transition into the Big Ten was considered successful overall.

The transition into the Big Ten has had its high and low points, but the University has seen many benefits from being in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, Barchi said. The University can get countless books at once, and students can take courses from other Big Ten schools and apply them at Rutgers.

“Football players will also need four to five or six years to transition because the level of competition is entirely different,” he said. “Anyone that thinks we’re suddenly going to go into the Big Ten and knock off Ohio State I want to say is smoking something.”

Since joining the Big Ten, the number of applicants from the midwest went up 18 percent, and the international student applications went up 40 percent, he said. The Master Plan will help to accommodate the increasing number of students and faculty.

The Master Plan is a transformation and rebuilding of the infrastructure that has not been done for about 20 years, he said.

This is a statement that will be interpreted two different way on this board:

  1. We can't knock off Ohio State, so don't even think about it. That is not on the radar.
  2. We can't knock off Ohio State today. But we will build to be able to knock them off in four to five to six years.

RU's last year in the AAC was marked by a few blowout losses...So maybe he thinks the AAC is on par with the B1G!!!
Just an excuse to take no action...

The University of Houston football team is 10-0 under its first-year coach -- a feat the Texas school’s leaders say validates the millions recently spent on improvements to its athletic program and merits another round of spending.

The University of Houston board of regents voted to more than double Tom Herman’s salary to $3 million, making him the highest paid coach among the "Group of Five," the smaller conferences that play high-level college football.

Houston’s basketball arena will also get a $60 million renovation, which follows the completion of a $125 million football stadium in August 2014, a nearly-finished $25 million basketball practice facility, and the addition of college baseball’s largest video board, now showing at Cougar Field.

"Our Tier One University has a nationally relevant football program, and we will keep it that way," said Chairman of the University of Houston system and billionaire restaurateur Tilman Fertitta. "We understand the link between academics and athletics. Our actions are designed to help the academic mission by increasing our exposure to the entire country."

Does that sound like a guy who is about to spend millions making a coaching change? I think some people on this board are smoking something if they think he is going to get rid of a coach who goes 4-8/5-7 after three straight bowl games. There better be something big in this second investigation, otherwise some on this board are going to be very disappointed going into next year.

OR,since we are not expected to knock off the B1G Boys it is OK to keep our present Coaching Staff since there was nothing else that they could do to improve the record.

Wrong and inappropriate thing to say. And once again, where does he say there is any real commitment to compete? Charter of conference says members will strive for excellence in both academics and athletics. No commitment = no leadership.

In essence, we don't need to upgrade facilities or upgrade coaching...we need to accept our fate as doormats and just try harder.
If this is his attitude. Why should any donor partner up with him? How about a little hope for the future bob?

Actually it takes teams about 2 or maybe 3 years to adjust to the new level of competition. His time line suggests he is going to happily put off investing in the program and his mention of ohio state sounds like the crap we hear from apologists on here, which may be where he got it from.

It doesn't "suggest" anything. He probably just didn't WANT to say "2-3 years," hence, setting unrealistic expectations in the minds of the fan base. I would have said the same exact thing in his shoes.

I read into his comments a bit differently than most on the board. He is basically saying that it will take five or six years to become competitive in the Big Ten which means there are no immediate plans to upgrade facilities or potentially hire a new head coach.

He simply and genuinely does not care about athletics if he did he would be on the forefront with Julie Hermann looking for a head coach that would take us to that next level.

I think most of you are trying to read too much into his remarks. I think he's just saying, "don't be unrealistic. I don't think he's sending any signal about retaining Flood or about anything else for that matter. And he is obviously committed to our being in the B1G, and I have no doubt he understands that the B1G wants us to be competitive -- otherwise, there won't be that many eyeballs in the New York areas.

Which obviously can be taken that it will take a few years to develop under a new coach:cool2:
I wouldn't read too much into what he said, this was an unscripted town hall meeting. But, let's hope that is the case!

I take it that Barchi meant RU FB can't be expected to be competitive with the top B1G programs in FB for at least 4- 5 years and not thinking about a new coach.
He's thinking ( just a guess) about the type of players that go to B1G schools compared to the type of players that went to BE/AAC schools that RU competed with before.

If RU broke ground on facilities tomorrow it would still take a number of years until all was finished and there would be a lagging improvement to recruiting which will take some time. So 5-6 years is a pretty reasonable time frame. Coincidently in 5 to 6 years we will be getting the full Big 10 payout.

The positive is Barchi seems to realize the correlation between applications and the BIG.

You all worry too much about replacing Flood. Just believe those who tell you that this story is written. I am tied in to people who are very pro Flood (and I was too) who completely believe he is done after Maryland. Even if the world wanted to save him and we were 7-3 right now, the report will be too much to bear as I am told. The words "lack of institutional control" are being thrown around after the arrests, academic mishaps and new discoveries.

Moz - those guys are positioning themselves to make a move to the Big 12. Only reason it hasn't happened yet is UTs veto and the fact that they don't want to share Houston with Houston. I've been in H-town for the last 7 years and they have a very loud and proud alumni base - and those alumni occupy trade floors all over Houston. I've got young alumni friends (under 30) from UH and they don't even worry about plunking down thousands for donations and tickets.

In that case, we are approaching DEFCON 1. This is going to be bad. The very bad. For all of us.

Dummy should have said 3-4 years, just like coaches do when they're recruiting high school students

I sincerely hope for RU FB sake that is not the case because that doesn't just affect Flood but the entire football program and NCAA involvement. The good thing is that RU doing the investigation before any ncaa involvement will be viewed as trying to be proactive. Your problems will be bigger than Flood if what your saying turns out to be accurate and yes, the job will viewed as toxic to a big time coach when so many other jobs are open. I definitely don't wish that on you guys so here's to hoping its not that serious.

Only at RU does the phrase "new discoveries" translate into more bad news. This board will show plenty of outrage after learning of new discoveries with our FB team.

This season cannot end soon enough. It feels much worse than in 2010 when we last went 4-8.

"need four to five or six years to transition" interesting - on many levels

So, it would seem that Barchi comprehends that Rutgers Football has to climb up a significant number of steps to be on a par with the rest of the conference.

Being an analytical guy and understanding the complexity of a four to five or six year process, Barchi must also realize that in order to climb the full required number of steps, Rutgers cannot spend three, four or five years apathetically sitting in neutral - doing nothing and then dramatically wake up and manage to deliver astronomical change that reaches the goal in the final year. Barchi is many things - but he is not a dunce - he knows that this program needs a series of years of uninterrupted increment improvement.

If Barchi sincerely believes & is genuinely implementing what he has stated, then he & the University have year by year improvement expectations - and there can be no doubt that this year represents a serious setback for the four to five or six year progress plan to be able to reach the anticipated goal.... and it is very hard to point to anything that will change this unfavorable trend while Flood is still aimlessly attempting to lead the program.

That's what you got out of a mean-nothing comment? Com'on, I'm not a fan of Barchi, but his comment said very, very little, if anything at all.

Well then figure out how to say something that says we are committed, there is hope, and he has some passion for leading a BIG 10 school.

Essentially saying the fans and donors are smoking crack might not be the way to go.

I can't believe so many people, time and time again, let Barchi off the hook every time he speaks and has zero to say.

Seems like every-time someone representing RU opens their mouth, they stick their foot in it.
Maybe they should just e-mail what they want to say .
Oops, that doesn't work either [roll]
