Bend Oregon
And I'm getting pretty excited about the trip. Will spend a few days in NYC with my wife, than she returns to Oregon and I head down to NB. I expect to be blown away by the growth in "University Heights" as well as at Cook and College Ave. Plan on spending Friday exploring the campuses. Lots of good advice on the board re: food and drink.

I plan to walk to the stadium from downtown for the exercise. Is it a good idea to walk back after the game? What other options exist? Any special places I should check out on campus? And I want to take in as much of the game day action as possible so when should I get to the stadium area? Already been invited to a tailgate too. All advice appreciated!

How far is Bend from Newberg?

Each month I rotate between my finance's house in Newberg, OR ....near Sherwood about 25 miles SW of Portland....and Cypress, CA (Northern OC).

Drop me a note.

Winter or summer? It about 3 hours in summer and in winter it could be 3 days. The drive between Portland and Bend is amazing and worth it alone. The transition from Pacific Northwest to high desert is remarkable. I have spent some time at Detroit Lake and Black Bute ranch along the drive. Some of the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen. I would hate to try it in winter though. The chains required sign is enough to make me turn around.

Don't know if you get to the city much but check out the 911memorial if you get a chance.

I hope you guys win, if just for the ethical reason PSU should lose.

Good for you! The old housing in University Heights is long gone. I spent the first few years of my life there (dad was at the Ag School, now Cook). You should definately allow for a lot of time to walk around campus. Lots of changes, most for the good but others less so.

Hopefully, it will be a nice weather day so you can do what you want to do.
As for the game itself, my guess is that this will be the first time you have ever be present for a game with PSU as we didn't renew playing them until '77 which looks like it was after you were there ('72). Bring lots of booze as this may get really ugly.

A few things

- Walking back after the game is fine, it will probably be pretty dark in the park but others will be walking too. There are plenty of shuttles back to college Ave too which is probably your best bet
- My group will start tailgating around noon. Definitely leave yourself at least a few hours to check out the closest lots (scarlet, yellow, blue etc). You should see the tailgate scene if you haven't been here in so long. There will be many friendly tailgates who will offer you food and beer, we're in blue with a red bus if you want to stop by. As mentioned above, the scarlet walk is worth checking out, along with the whole athletes glen area.
- Check out Livingston during your campus tour, lots of changes there recently and the new athletic facility soon to be started as well.
- Downtown has a ton of great restaurants and bars, definitely check them out depending on your tastes. You'll probably want to go to the usual college spots too (stuff yer face, grease truck etc)
- Any other questions just ask!

Check out all of the links in the attached thread for great info to:

https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/game-day-and-travel-advice-for-visiting-fans.101543/

After your visit please give us your impressions of your experience at RU and New Brunswick.

A trip to Livingston Campus is also a must. By the way, University Heights is now know as Busch Campus. No one on campus will know what you mean by the "Heights." That name hasn't been used in over 30 years.

If you haven't been to New Brunswick in those 45 years, you will not recognize it. It is a great medium-size town now with some fantastic restaurants.

Enjoy your visit.

RUforester72,

Welcome back! If you haven't been to Rutgers in 45 years, that means your last game was in 1971 - the same year the Cannon was gifted by the Rutgers Class of 1949. That was the Columbia-Rutgers game. Did you go to that one?

Regarding where to go and what to eat. There will be plenty of written suggestions, but I suggest you just show up on main campus and ask around. Good luck and hope you have a great day!

Bad news - you can't drink at games anymore and they highly frown on tearing down the goalposts. Make sure you check out the updated rules for what you can bring into the stadium - the short answer is nothing unless you are wearing it, plan to sit on it, or are carrying it in a small clear bag. I enjoy walking back after games and its fine, but the busses are there if you want them.

Have a great trip - I think you will be happy you made it. For 250 years, Rutgers is looking up big time.

We literally rotate between loactions every month (usually about mid month).

July 2015 we went back to NJ / NYC. I was able to walk into the stadium, take pictures and walk around. Didn't get to see a game but the stadium didn't look like what I remembered from 1967-8.

Drop me an email at rutgersmo at roadrunner dot com....and let's plan no chatting (maybe even Skyping).

Leaving for So. Cal. next week....and back to Oregon again mid December.

Thanks

MO

Too bad your wife doesn't plan to join you when you visit NB/Pisc. Even if she's not a fan of football and would have no interest in the game, I'm surprised you couldn't convince her to take a trip down your memory lane by checking out the campus and town where you went to school. That is, I'm assuming she's never been there if you haven't also been back in 45 years (or is that only in reference to being back for a home game, not necessarily being back to campus in general?). Either way, enjoy your visit.

So what if they did?

How did you get back to College Ave after night games back then? I thought the horses were stabled and the stage coaches stopped running at nightfall? But seriously welcome back everything has changed since the 70's ... You will not recognize anything on George and Albany Streets. Devco and others have done a great job.

Rutgers didn't play their first home night game until the Thursday night game on ESPN with Pittsburgh in 1992.

Or over it either. The trains are diesel and not steam anymore.

The great news about the wife returning home is that now you can fully enjoy some hookers and blow. For some reason I have yet to determine, wives seem less inclined to enjoy such things.

Just realized that an aborted reply showed up at the top of my earlier post. That's one thing I consider a bug in this new forum software. It caches written but unposted replies indefinitely. So that sometimes, when we go back to a thread and decide to compose and post a reply, the prior discarded reply content shows up.

As the pirate with the steering wheel in his pants always says: it's driving me nuts.

Hmmm.. headed to NYC.. wife is from Oregon.. are you guys professional activists working these protests?

(that was a joke.. all political responses please head to the CE board)

But seriously... keep an eye on the protests if headed to NYC.

On campus.. on College Ave, be sure to check out the Seminary Place area.. across from Willie the Silent.. will not spoil the surprise. And yes, you can walk tot he stadium from the train station/downtown.. maybe walk down the olde Queens Campus across Voorhees Mall to see Willie. The Voorhees art museum is pretty nice.. and my fave building is across seminary.. the theological seminary's romanesque Gardner Sage Library.. if you can get in for a peek it looks like it should be in an Indiana Jones movie.

He could paddle down the old Raritan, like they did in Revolutionary times, although with the drought there way not be enough depth for it.

Yes! Occupy the Point! :victory:
Smoke jumper? I remember trapper stockman from DKE would drop out of school for a semester to be a smoke jumper!

Have an enjoyable and safe trip back, Forester. By that name I assume you were a pre-Cook School of Agricultural Sciences Grad. If so what did you do with your career?-sounds like you are a real "aggie". I was Cook '86.

If you are in the area of the visitors' center, look for "R" tailgate-usually our group is 1st row yellow lot (right by the side road leading into stadium) in the corner near the visitor's center (sometimes a U2 flag and oft several flags together)-still not 100% myself (also have a lingering-worsened tonight-stomach bug-can eat that tailgate food though) but our group likes to meet new people and invite all to "R"(-literally shot glasses in a "R") toast (need someone to drink my hard liquor).

Sounds you may have some good stories from the 70's et al. I think you'll enjoy the "big time" stadium.
