I remember hearing him after every game on the football and basketball post game shows. Did he give up after all that the 2 programs have been though? Haven't heard him in a few years.

Haha yes who could forget his colorful display of optimism after each and every Rutgers sporting event...I am afraid to think of what might have become of him with the state of both programs...hope he chimes in on this thread cause I kind of fear the worst...

Really the miss the Neil Solonz Show on WCTC. Talked a lot of RU football with these guys you both mention.
I think Neil left the station 10 years ago to do Radio for minor league baseball in Iowa.

I know that Skip gave up his basketball tickets. Think he got sick. Of course watching RU bb gets you sick.

Skip used to sit in sec 202 and he almost busted a vein yelling at FHJ how he just killed the program. After Hills first year he went AWOL.

Skip's signature line..."good to be with you Neil" and then you will spiral down into some gloom and doom about the basketball program which was almost always on point

I don't even think the Knightline is on anymore, such a shame what happened at WRSU

how about some other famous callers

Andrew from New Brunswick
JR from Lincroft
Ray from Bethleham
Jim from Atlantic City
and of course who could forget Mike from West Orange

Skip's other classic line was "I'd appreciate your thoughts." Another funny WCTC caller was Steve in Sayerville.

bac2, you got it....funny how when Schiano became coach we never heard from these regulars (staged callers, I thought, people I NEVER heard ofm asking extremely soft questions - "hello coach, Paul from Long Island......yes, when would you run an end around play (in comparison to busting it up the middle) when trying to establish the running game?" GS....ah, gooooood question Paul, well..........blah blah blah

John from S Brunswick was so funny....he would call after a blowout.........Neil......Neil.............Neil...................................where do I start?

I think I won the trivia question on WCTC at least 3 times. I liked the nightly show from 7:10-8:00PM every Monday through Friday. Bruce was good on the show when he did it. For years John from South Brunswick always called and was negative. Skip was always the first caller after almost every basketball game. How about the barber from New Brunswick who was from Chicago. I think his nickname was Chicago. He was a regular too. Now we are so bad we have almost no show on WCTC any more.

who was the guy that said 'Tailgate strong' during the Schiano years. Mo from Hoboken?

LOL I remember Chicago in New Brunswick. He always called into the sports buzz with Dave cooperman and Lori rubenson. Damn this thread is bringing back memories.

I used to sit in from of Skip at BBall... He was a real negative guy.. Always cusing the team, real bad, in front kids.. And his Dad too.. When the team won, you never heard a peep. They were asses, both if them.

Chicago used to sit in 118. He never comes to the games anymore. I believe Andrew moved to Alabama. He used to call from there. Knightline was on after Saturday's game. They were talking about football. I won many a CD from that store on Somerset St. from answering trivia on WRSU.

WCTC did a special roundtable show back in the early 90's on the state of Rutgers football. Included Bruce Johnson Jennifer Kusanka Joe Calabrese and Neil Solanz. The same crap is still going on.

I used to write down highlights of what callers said...remember back in the early to mid 90s no message board. I was going through some things the other day and found some after a horrific loss to Syracuse by 30 points 92-62 to drop the record to 11-13 in 1997 in what would be Wenzel's last season. Wenzels record were getting worse and worse but he was given two years to coach in the BE when some wanted him gone sooner, there were some that even wanted him back after his 4 straight losing season.

Neil

therapy time
wasn't even that close
pathetic 38-9 run
where to begin, its spiraling downward
run of out gas for the season
party for Syracuse

Skip from Elizabeth...1st caller

good to be with you Neil
I am concerned that this program can no longer defend the friendly confines of the RAC
team has unraveled

Dan from Piscataway

blown out of joint
hire Bill Herrion of Drexel
Rick Majerus a pipe dream

Mark from Carteret

time for a change
hire Tim Welsh of Iona
Josh Sankes looks promising

Neil

Jim Harrick of UCLA shady
Perry Clark

Andrew from New Brunswick

hire a combo basketball coach/AD
Grunniger is the master of mediocrity
Grunniger = George Young
tired of losing
mediocre for so long
mediocrity accepted
wouldn't be a good team in the A10 either
hire Jim Harrick or John Chaney
blue hair and just don't care

John (not sure if from So Bruns)

hire John Chaney..ace in hole is he is friends with C Vivian Stringer and has good relationship with Lawrence
Jim Harrick...show me the money

George Mackaronis Presidents of Court Club..he was a big supporter of Wenzel

I know what you are trying to do Neil and its wrong

Mike from West Orange

lack of depth
Billet and Johnson are shot
Len Robbins of APP says there is a difference of opinion on the Board of Trustees, pro Wenzel guys say we are on right path and he absolutely must stay

and here were my thoughts that I wrote down but did not call...

did not shoot with 9 seconds left down by 30
Wenzel's last days are very very near
abysmal showing
symbolized the season
rock bottom
falling flat
enough is enough
horrible showing
mockery
23-5 run ugh

classic...you should hand then to Hobbs. The same crap is going on 20 years later

I had to take the shuttle bus from work over to the game one night- I think we were playing UNC on a Thursday in 2008. I get on the bus and I'm talking to this fan and I knew right away it was Skip from Elizabeth. He sounded exactly like he did on the radio. I just said to him, "You are the famous Skip from Elizabeth aren't you?" He didn't deny it. If I remember correctly, he didn't post on the message boards. Not sure if that changed over the years. John from South Brunswick made me want to throw things.

What does skip look like ?
It has been a while, but I think he had a mustache or beard, tall guy, not heavy or anything. Nice guy, but I just thought it was funny that he spoke exactly like he did on the radio. Carlin was another guy like that. I was behind him in line at the Stop and Shop in Watchung. He was a pretty nice guy and cordial when the checker recognized him.

Skip was tall with no beard or mustache and often wore a Giants windbreaker. He came to games with his father.I spoke with him prior to every home game.Skip was passionate about mens basketball and had similar viewpoints to many on the board now wondering when Rutgers basketball would once again be relevant.I spoke to a Rutgers employee who works at the RAC and went to school with Skip .This conversation was a couple years ago and he has no idea what happened to Skip.

Solondz was the play by play announcer for the Durham Bulls ( Tampa Bay Rays AAA affiliate ) for a long time. He gave a bunch of Rutgers Alum a tour of the facility before the game against whatever AAA team Todd Frazier was on. A few years ago he got called up to the Big Leagues and now works for Tampa Bay Rays Radio

Skip....lol. We used to shake our heads at the same things. He knew his X's and O's and we used to see the same things

We really could use that radio show again. I used to listen all of the time after the game. Used to listen to the drive home show on wctc as well

Neil was awesome. He was in my Writing class freshmen year. I could tell he was extremely serious about getting into media/radio right from the get go. He was awesome on WRSU and its a shame that since Danny and Adam graduated a few years ago the station just lost its appeal. on WCTC he was such a pleasure to listen to because he really walked a fine balance. He was critical but very fair. Remember back then expecations were high. RU had been to 2 NCAAs and 2 NITs in 4 years, not far removed from that...now it seems like 20 point plus losses are excepted as part of the growing process...our standards have fallen so low that we praise guys like Williams and Laurent if they make a bucket...that's not right..we need to take accountability with the program and hire a new coach

I'm pretty sure that was his line for almost every call. Reading that brought me right back.
