After seeing all the hate on the switch to Adidas all over social media, I decided to do an experiment and see what some football and hoops recruits thought about the switch in gear. Here are all the responses I received.
Football
'17 QB Johnathan Lewis (St. Peter’s Prep - NJ): “I mean it doesn’t really matter to me. Nike or Adidas as long as we look good it doesn’t matter to me."
'17 FB Brendan DeVera (Wayne Hills - NJ): “When I found out last week I was pretty stoked. I always loved Adidas and everything they have have. They will give a bunch of gear and stuff plus I love there cleats."
'17 WR Hunter Hayek (Wayne Hills - NJ): “Honestly I don’t mind the change. I don’t really use low top cleats, but I guess I have to now with Rutgers getting Adidas. The uniforms for UCLA are really nice so we have some designs like that I wouldn’t mind it at all.”
'17 WR Everett Wormley (Burlington Twp - NJ): "I personally love Adidas, specifically their cleats . I wore their cleats & some of their gloves all through high school & their gear is solid too. If there was a brand we left Nike for, I wanted it to be Adidas . Glad to have that happen . #NewSpeed."
'17 WR Shameen Jones (Cardinal Hayes - NY): “I’m actually happy they’re switching to Adidas. Ive’ always been an Adidas fan. Everything is good, the uniforms, gloves, and all the gear. Only thing I’m a little unhappy with is the cleats. Some Adidas cleats are a little painful because they are so thin and light, but they do have the best lightweight cleats so that’s a big plus.
'17 OL Owen Bowles (Cedar Creek - NJ): “I think it’s pretty cool we were Adidas at Creek for the past two years. I enjoyed the brand and they got a lot of nice gear that they gave us. The only thing I dislike is they don’t have any true lineman cleats."
'17 ATH Tyler Hayek (Wayne Hills - NJ): “I really like adidas cleats and uniforms so I really have no problem with the switch."
'18 QB Devin Leary (Timber Creek - NJ): “Personally I like Adidas a lot. I really like their new designs, they are different from other brands. The new cleats they have are extremely light. I’m also an overall fan of Adidas clothing and gear too.”
'18 QB Will Levis (Xavier - CT): "I'm honestly a fan of all three major brands (under armour, Nike, and adidas), but my high school is Nike and I've kind of gravitated towards wearing their stuff more so than the other brands. Adidas has come onto the scene with some sick college jerseys the past few years, and I'm sure they will hook up Rutgers with some sweet uniform sets and gear. All in all, the brand of any school that recruits me will not affect my affect my decision of where I end up though."
'18 LB Vinny DePalma (DePaul Catholic - NJ): "
I think it's cool. UA, Nike and Adidas are all great, I probably own mostly Nike stuff out of all three. During the recruitment process I don't think it plays that big of a role, they are more of just bonuses."
'19 OL John Holmstead (St. Joe’s Metuchen - NJ): “I mean for all the great and things you get are nice and stuff, but personally football is more import than what type of uniforms we are wearing.”
Hoops:
’17 PG Soufiane Mensah (Marshalltown CC - IA): "I'll be honest whatever the brands is doesn't make a different for me. I know Adidas is the NBA sponsor and sponsors big time soccer teams like Real Madrid so I think it's big time! Also from what I saw on others teams like Kansas, NC state....I love it!"
'17 SG Geo Baker (Proctor Academy - NH): "Yeah I heard about that. I love it. I'm not one to really care about what's on my feet and what not. I’m excited about this adidas deal because Nike has so many more schools than Adidas. So I think that adidas will be focused a lot more on providing gear for Rutgers than Nike was in the past."
'17 SG CJ Kelly (QHST - NY): "Doesn't matter to me. I played with an adidas team this past summer. It was fine no difference between Nike and them. The shoes they have us were really comfy."
’18 SF Cole Swider (St. Andrews - RI): "I like the switch, I personally think Adidas is the best brand. They also have a better style than Nike in my opinion lol so it's a great look and just helps adidas promote their brand. I love adidas, the circuit is also great."
