Thanks for the feedback. I'll heed the advice and remove the OP. The mother did not mention if she had any interaction w/ staff or if she had been on campus. I did not insist on any other information.

Going to be as vague as necessary here. Spoke with a recruits mother through work today. She brought up her son was going to play D1 football next year. I inquired and she told me her sons name and went on to tell me about him not knowing I already knew who he was. Anyway, she told me she would like for him to stay close so she could see him play but thag Michigan was his favorite. I let her know Rutgers is an improving program and beat Michigan last year. She also mentioned her sons current football program preached family and togetherness and I let her know that is the back bone of Rutgers program.

She did not know either of the above tidbits. In addition to thanking me for my service she thanked me for the football information. What's the verdict?
Posting about it here isn't helping anything.

Did you try and sway her by giving her something extra in the service you provided her?

Question 1 is "are you a booster?". A booster is defined as anyone who has given money to the program, inclusive of ticket purchases.

If so, then a potential violation exists, UNLESS your relationship with said parent pre-existed the prospect's status as a student athlete and was not caused by the recruit's status as a student athlete.

So in other words, if you've ever talked to her before about anything other than her son, you have a pre-existing relationship and the conversation can be considered "incidental". You should, however, avoid such conversations in the future.

And the other issue is is he a recruit that could be handed cash since we now have a backdoor connection with him. (Just Kidding.)

People here are way too uptight. The next school that gets a violation because a fan talks with a recruits mother/brother/uncle/sister will be the first. I don't even care if you bought a ticket to a Rutgers game at some point that technically qualifies you as a booster.

Don't hand out cash, don't give out fake jobs, do talk up Rutgers, do dispel some myths, do present some facts and even some opinions.

Schools are out there hooking family members up with JOBS, and we are worried about a conversation. The Auburn and Tennessee boards would be laughing at us right now.

Wisconsin had to stop recruiting a player last year because a fan/booster had contact at a tailgate and started tweeting them. They turned themselves(UW) about it and that was their punishment was the kid could not sign with them unless sat out a year and paid his own way for the first year of school there.

What the OP did is fine. He did not search out the parent or player and everything was done in a professional setting. As long as he just gave facts and didn't do anything to try and enhance RU's standing with the player or parent then it is fine.

In cases like this, probably better if you didn't post it on a message board. But sounds like you were just shooting the breeze with a parent, and telling them about Rutgers. You never spoke to the recruit, nor did you ask the mother to ask her son to go to Rutgers.

These minor recruiting violations can get crazy though, A friend of a friend brought a recruit to one of our tailgates. All his friends could eat and drink, but since we are boosters, he couldn't. That would be entertaining him with free food. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere, but seriously?

Here are the rules for boosters:

IMPERMISSIBLE ACTIVITIES:
  • A booster may not have any contact with a prospective student-athlete. Contact includes phone calls, letters, and faxes.
  • A booster may not provide tickets, transportation, or room and board for a prospect, coach, or relative to visit the campus.
  • A booster may not entertain in any way or give gifts, benefits, and free or reduced services to any prospect, coach or relative.
  • A booster may not contact a prospect’s coach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospect.
PERMISSIBLE ACTIVITIES:
  • A booster may view a prospect’s game as long as no contact is made.
  • If an established relationship already exists between booster and prospect, the relationship may continue as long as these relationships are not for recruitment purposes.
  • If unavoidable incidental contact occurs, only normal greetings may take place.
  • A booster may receive calls from prospective student-athletes only if the prospect initiates the call and no recruitment takes place during the conversation. Limit only information to the university in general.

So the obvious MAJOR question is how the hell did she not know that Rutgers was all about FAMILY! WTF! Isn't that the first thing we tell our recruits/families?

Second....it was incidental contact and you're fine. I do get the sense that there's some sarcasm in your OP. R U really concerned or just bragging that you had contact with a recruits mother. If so, just buckle it up.

Because the Op's story or the mother probably aren't entirely truthful. We have zero recruits(that we are actually recruiting from NJ who don't know we beat Michigan last year). We also have zero recruits who don't know we preach family....it was on our jersey's for christ sake. So, either he is embellishing a bit or maybe having fun with us? Or, we aren't really recruiting him and him liking UM is about as important and me liking USC during my recruitment.

LOL at "old" men (anything 30+) obsessing about a process they have zero impact on (unless you're paying...of course)

Let recruiting be done by those who are tasked to do it...oh and don't stalk on Twitter either...that's creepy!

Yea, Vk I feel you.... I was a California lean until I signed with Rutgers.

If you failed to tell her that there's a school immediately to our west in Pennsyltucky who covered up a child molester for upwards of 14 years because their football reputation was more important than the lives of dozens of young boys, then it is a recruiting violation.

I high fived Ted Field once, is that acceptable as a normal greeting?

Just look at twitter, that defines improper contact, but there is no way to enforce the rule there. Contact everywhere, but how would one actualy confirm that a tweeter pushing for one school isn't in fact some one from another school causing problems?

This is what I think happened with Ted Field. I mentioned this in the other thread, but not many agreed

I also talked to Pollock and Ted Field before the PSU game last year. The atmosphere for that game though sold itself. But ncaa-violate away fellas. If you ain't cheating you ain't trying - signed every SEC school ever. except Vanderbilt

Because saying it over and over doesn't make it less wrong.

I don't see a violation but you could also mention that Rutgers as good a school as it is may not be the right fit for every kid. Encourage her to evaluate other schools as well for the best fit. As a colleague you want the best for her family and not Rutgers. If her son is a good student then maybe he prefers Cornell or UPenn where the degree and netowkring will be incredible.

Hey OP..now modify the title to make this thread disappear.

Wait.. can you do that with this new system?
