Reminder: Womens soccer on BTN tonight

Tough one on the road.....

My understanding is Illinois is a tough get on the road.

Bad loss on national tv, letting in a late goal.

I figured they would lose because I set time aside to watch it.

Are they missing a few better players to injury?
I ask because they did not look good at midfield.

We had two players not make the trip due to injury. One of which was a starting mid. I believe she is center mid.

Illinois played smarter, RU had better players but too much 1V1 when a simple pass to another open RU player would have been the right play.

Their goalie made 1 great save in the first half and she outplayed our goalie in the game.

For team sports, you can not let injuries enter the discussion. It always comes off sounding weak.

I don't know, some teams are built around a superstar or two - take them out, and the rest of the team doesn't function nearly as well. Very few teams have interchangeable parts where the loss of one or two key people isn't noticed.

Of course, injuries are part of the game, but a lot of times those injuries mean the difference between wins and losses. Same as bad calls are part of the game, and sometimes mean the difference between wins and losses (e.g. Maradona's "hand of god" goal).

RU got some terrible calls - especially when it was 1-1 and the RU player got drilled in the box - should have been a PK. My game perspective was that Illinois did just enough to squeak out a win based on a few RU mistakes. Illinois first goal was a disaster - misplayed by both our goalie and the woman protecting the post.

"bad loss"??? How so? I think Illinois was 6-2-1 going into last night, at home, and we were without a couple kids due to injury.

I watched nearly the entire game and the Illini were the better side for a good portion of the night. Not sure how much or GK has been tested during the scoreless streak but neither goal allowed last night reflected well on her. I thought when we got the equalizer we come out of there no worse than a tie since we responded well to the first Illini goal. That was not the case. Hard to be overly critical given the body of work thus far but either we are not the 11th ranked team or Illinois deserves to be ranked as well.

Sometimes teams, and stars, have off nights. She IS the starting keeper for the U-20 national team and is very likely Hope Solo's replacement, down the road, so I wouldn't get too upset over a couple of bad games in her sophomore year. It WILL happen.
