There are many similarities and critical differences in the Rettig & Rocket sagas that have immersed this board.
Similarities:Rettig and the Rocket were 4 star recruits.They were hyped & excited the fans.
Early RU:Both captivated the fan base & press when playing well vs. the NSUs,& Howard(Rocket).Both were shut down thereafter to the dismay of many.A doghouse implication for the Rocket(practice?Attitude?).Alleged playbook(?) issues for Rettig.There was a lack of productivity at both positions(Laviano seems to have taken to a new level,but Rocket backs performed well only against lower level teams)
Coaches: .Schiano & Flood perceived as stubborn,intransigent & immune to public sentiment.For 2 years Rocket was always "in the mix",while rarely seeing the field.He began his Jr year as "named" starter,but was relegated to third team after gaining 16 yds in 7 carries vs UNC.(Jamison rushed for 1 yd. per carry & Huggins for negative ydg.)
Rettig has been benched(save garbage,where he showed ability.Flood continues to prop the struggling Laviano.(only response is"Chris is our starter")
Player reaction:Rettig seems to be handling things in a mature manner,without public airing.Rocket acted out in front of his teammates,approached Schiano & abrubtly left the team.
Postscript:Rocket played two years at Divis.2 IUP(Cignetti).He started 16 games & rushed for over 2,700 yds.He tried out for several pro teams,was not drafted, & got arrested in 2014 after a bar fight,& resisting arrest.
Rettig is stiil with the team & probably wait to see if Flood is replaced,while continuing to ride the pines.
Conclusion:Rettig & Rocket both had coaches who refused to play them,despite public outcry..Huggins & Laviano seemed to be favored by respective coaches,to the detriment of the two players.
Rettig has behaved admirably.If he chooses to transfer he can play right away at a lower level(like Rocket) or lose a year of eligibility.
