You may not know his name but you certainly know his face from football and basketball and wrestling. Former usher for RU and one of the biggest RU fans and supporters around. Dave Rosenthal died of a heart attack on his way to work today. 64y/o

RIP Dave, I will miss seeing you around and talking to you.

Dave was a fixture at RU and also with the Somerset Patriots for a long time. Very sad and he will be missed by many. Always enjoyed talking with him through the years.

How long was he an usher for. Think I remember him back when I was in school.

1993-2017. Was an usher than supervisor.

Current fixture at every football & MBB game. Saw him when we went to the USC game, ran into him at one of the recent home MBB games & know he had plans for the MBB game at MSG this Saturday.
Huge loss to Rutgers fandom

Was shocked and crushed by the news yesterday. Absolutely terrible. People like yourself @MrsScrew always asked me if I had met Dave yet as I was always there early even before the white bus days and Dave was always there around dawn. When a friend finally said here comes Dave I realized we had met many times before.
He was one of those that would go out of his way just to say hi. A great Rutgers fan but his love for sports didn't stop with the Scarlet Knights. We always talked about a game we watched the night before. Great sense of humor. Dave, you will be missed! My condolences to Dave's family and of course Patty 💔

Chris Paladino is hosting a memorial for David on Wednesday January 29th at 7:00 at the NB PAC (performing arts center)
11 Livingston Ave New Bruns.
I think we should all wear Rutgers gear in honor of Dave. I know he would've loved that.

My daughters and brother worked at the RAC for Dave.
Funny story, daughter had rough break up with boyfriend, we were attending a game as spectators and she noticed ex in student section with a beer he snuck in, called Dave and got him kicked out.

Updated memorial info

Afterward, join many of us as we go to watch the Rutgers Men’s Basketball team play Northwestern. Tipoff is at 9:00 PM. Most of us will be heading to Tavern on the George afterward to continue honoring Dave.

We hope to see you there as we celebrate the life of a truly great friend.

When Rutgers beat Iowa St. in the NIT Final 4 in '04, Dave nearly broke my knee jumping up and down while we celebrated. I'm pretty sure he bought my drinks at Mustang Harry's afterwards. It took me 20 minutes to limp down there. Dave and I ran in the same tight RU circle for about 15 years before guys started moving away and we gradually lost touch to the extent we only saw one another a few times a year. I regret that now. I thought there was more time. Goes to show... you just never know.

There is no question he would have been there tomorrow. This time he's got the best seat in the house.

64 and a heart attack scares the heck outta me.

RIP and so sorry to hear this.

Please anyone who doesn’t, 30 min per day of cardio activity. It’s the best thing anyone can do for your heart
Didn't know Dave, but I recognize the pics and remember seeing him around at the RAC many times and just saying hello. RIP.

One of my best friends just died from a heart attack at 54 which is way too young. Was in ok shape but had high cholesterol and BP. One more reason I retired relatively young... you just never know.

I honestly believe there is something odd going on with heart attacks... any age seems more susceptible. I suppose it could just be the food issues that RFKjr talks about building up.. or it could be something much more sinister... and I only mean an unforeseen outcome from something else.

The data on this are interesting. The rate of cardiovascular-related deaths (including heart attacks of course) are way down (35-40%) since 2000, but those deaths bumped back up a bit after 2020, possibly related to the pandemic, but have since returned to about 2020 levels. The more interesting thing according to some of the experts in the linked article is that these experts feel like current levels should be much lower now that we know much better what causes cardiovascular disease and heart attacks - but these mostly common sense preventative measures simply aren't being adopted that well.

I’m not putting my tin foil hat on or anything, but I do think that part of the issue of late is the incredible rise in Energy Drinks which are LOADED with caffeine, sugar and enough B12 to wake a sleeping Giant. People are drinking 3-4 of these per day sometimes, it’s over 1000 mg of caffeine alone. That’ll destroy one’s heart. I could be wrong, I just genuinely walk into a Gas station for a drink and see more energy drinks than anything else these days, honestly there’s like one row that has bottled water and Bai Waters next to one another and the other 8 cases are just total junk.

I don’t think any single politician has anything to do with it, it’s unfortunately a lot of people that just don’t know. That and a disturbing number of people still don’t go to the doctor for even a basic annual.

I do think there could also be some contributing factor from a certain population of political affiliation who no longer trusts doctors and western medicine the way they once did prior to the pandemic and that 100% plays a role.

Who knows really. Bottom line, don’t smoke cigarettes, quit if you do, get regular checkups, be open to BP medicine (I’m 6’3 210 lbs and a former college athlete whose 35 years old and doctor still put me on Lisinopril with my family history) and 30 min a day of cardio.

One critical paragraph from that article that also helps explain the rise since 2020:

“Heart failure is more prevalent now than it was in the past, and it’s more prevalent because of the successes of cardiovascular care, particularly around myocardial infarction and hypertension,” he said. “There are more baby boomers alive, and therefore there are more baby boomers who also have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction”

My father is a perfect example of this, in 2020 ironically he went in for what was supposed to be a routine scheduled Stent and turned into an emergency quadruple bypass as he had a 95% block in his widowmaker artery. During recovery a week later in ICU he had a stroke. He amazingly survived and is still here but it has taken an enormous toll on him. He was 66 at the time of the surgery and just turned 70 last week.
