I still have the older Rutgers knight head NJ license plates. Anybody know if I can get the same license plate number on the newer R license plates?

I was told no previously - hopefully things have changed since then (about 2-3 years ago)....

I see some have "R U" vertically on the right hand side, and some don't..... Why is that?

My current Rutgers Knight Head plate has the "R U" vertically on the left hand side.....

On the new plates you get a Block R on the left and if you take one of the assigned numbers, you get the vertical RU on the right, if you to make your own vanity plate, you do not get the vertical RU on the right, just the Block R on the left

Yes you can. Fill out the application at this link http://www.alumni.rutgers.edu/s/896/index.aspx?sid=896&gid=1&pgid=2721&cid=4918 choose standard plate and in the additional comments box explain that you already have an old knight head plate and would like to keep your same number on the new plate. I know someone who did this already and it worked.
They actually have a drop down box for 'STATE' with all states listed. So I could order a NJ plate even if I lived in NY or Alaska?
BTW, I do have an old blue RU plate but it's not on my car for obvious reasons.

You could fill out that request form but all it does is get them to send you the correct application for the plate you want. You still have to apply to the state of NJ which, unless you have a car registered in NJ, would get rejected.

So in order to replace my RU xxxx plate (vertical RU on the left), I would be replacing an assigned number with the same assigned number (and end up with the vertical RU on the right?).... Not sure they would do that.... Or I could just order a vanity plate with xxxx (assuming those 4 numbers are available) on it, and not have the vertical RU on the right.

Correct?

My friend had the assigned number Knight head plate, not the RU on the left plate but was able to replace it with the same assigned number plate. If they can't accommodate the switch to the same assigned number, then you are out of luck as the vanity plates require the first 3 characters to be letters, followed by 2 characters which can be letters or numbers.

Thanks - I would only be interested if I could keep the same four digit number.
