First and foremost--I am no Source! But since the present QB situation is front and center, here is my recollection with the QB competition at RU from 1966. If my memory is not that good, feel free to correct it.
The starting QB that year was Pete Savino. Think of Chas Dodd. He was not tall, but whatever he didn't have in height, he made up in tenacity and grit. The second string QB was Fred Eckert, a taller QB and better overall passer.
The fans were no different then than they are now, they were either in the Savino camp or the Eckert camp. On October 22 against Columbia, RU was down 34 - 30 with 57 seconds left. Coach Dr. John Bateman pulled Savino and put in Eckert. Eckert marched RU down the field and threw the winning TD to Jack Emmer with 14 seconds left. Eckert led RU to 2 more victories in the ensuing weeks over BU and Holy Cross. Savino was moved to tight end in 1967.
