RU vs Wisconsin 12/11/20 game thread

Turned tv on. There is an old OSU football game on, but the crawl says RU Women's BB. I give up.

27-26 at the half. This is one of the better Rutgers WBB teams of recent and yet this is one of the quietest game threads ever. Scared to see what Monday 1pm one looks like!

27-26 Wisc. at the half. Zippy with 10 is our high scorer. We should be beating them by way more.

Rutgers is doing a poor job attacking the zone defense .Wisconsin is staying in the game because Rutgers is committing too many fouls.Guarantes needs to play at the top of the key to get some open jump shots.

I haven't followed their recruiting closely but wasn't Wisconsin WBB absolutely terrible like last year or the year before? Won 0 Big Ten games or something .... I think last year we beat them 3 times. Not sure what's going on but we need to find a way to make some baskets and stop letting them just eat us up inside ... Arella shouldn't be playing Center, she can't get too many fouls called on her. A lack of a real Center will hurt us this year

Defense is forcing a ton of turnovers but the team is ice cold from the field--shooting 25% FG, and missing a ton of shots they usually make. If they were even shooting 35% from field they'd be up by 10.

Let's hope law of averages comes into play in second half.

The Maryland game is listed @2pm for Monday. But after today's nonsense with game time who knows.
The Brenda group will kill us if we play like today.

Well that was a really good quarter. Turnovers and movement generated a lot of easier shots. Outscored Wisc 27-19. Leading 53-46

Singleton has dropped the ball a few times inside. Also if your double teamed don’t put the ball on the floor, guaranteed turnover. Would like to see her rougher and tougher. Also, Liz needs to shoot and fire

5 seconds in the key not called and then a foul on RU. Rutgers with a 10-point lead with under 4 mins to go buy dwindled down to 4 with still 2 mins left thanks to refs falling asleep at the wheel unless it’s to call a foul on RU

As usually happens the refs call so many fouls on us that we get scared to play defense and it lets other teams mount comebacks

Wisconsin imbounds with 2 secs on the shot clock, ball gets tipped rolls around on the floor for 5 seconds and finally the clock starts. Luckily rolled out of bounds for RU. Now Gilles gets body slammed for the floor and silence

4 point game, Rutgers ball, 33 seconds. Need to get the ball across half court and in Ariella’s hands and we win, simple

Wisconsin manages to foul while only taking .6 seconds off the clock. Bucky Badger pushing the buttons tonight

Wisconsin player standing out of bounds grabbing the ball and it’s called a jump. Would be ok with them missing that if they didn’t call apps 8 out of bounds calls against us. Then the Wisconsin girl is moving around out of bounds which is illegal and no call. Luckily they throw it away. Hit our FTS. Rutgers wins 70-65 !!

OK win against a B1G team on the road. I'm sure CVS will kindly tell them that there is a lot to work on. Really impressed with Diamond.

Terrible shooting night for Arella, but she grabbed 9 rebounds and made her FTs. Not very concerned about her bad shooting night—you just know she’s going to the gym first thing when back in NJ.

That was a good win against a team we should beat (or were at least predicted to beat). I don't think we played well, but the 3rd quarter we took it to them. I really like the way Diamond keeps shooting even when missing, thats what we need a scorers mentality. The press looked great, and frankly our passing on offense looked really good. Overall I'm bullish. I think we had a substandard game against a .500 team on the road, and won. In previous seasons we would have found a way to lose.

Isn’t it a travel when you move your feet on the inbound and it’s not after a made basket?

Wisconsin blatantly did that AT LEAST 2x.

Good win that is needed against a .500 team in the conference, on the road. I thought there was a lot of positives. The press, the overall defense, the depth we have, and the aggressiveness. I also like the way Diamond keeps shooting and attacking even though she is missing. Of course this will change if it continues.

A good league win that we need to have if we want tot be a top team in the Big 10.

Having now watched the full game, and knowing that:
  • This was team's second game, and first in 12 days
  • The team left for WI the morning of the game
  • COVID-19 in general
  • WI is not a great team
A few more thoughts:

RU missed a ton of lay-ups, though oddly by some of our best finishers (Arella, even Diamond, Zippy too)--not too concerned given the culprits...for now.

The offense was lethargic in the first half, second half, particularly 3rd quarter, saw much better cuts, active movement. Until the team can show they can make 3-pointers, we will be zoned every game--needs to be focus in practice.

Great game for Zippy--18pts, 6 steals, looks confident and in control and aggressive. Player of the game.

Usual great effort from Tekia, though she needs to be practicing her FTs.

Mael has yet to get going offensively this year, but she's so active on the court, doesn't force much, and rarely makes mistakes.

Arella had an unusually bad shooting night, but was still active throughout the game, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals, and got herself to the FT line.

Singleton looked solid, particularly when she got more active in the second half. She fouled out though with about 6min left, needs to be careful since CVS doesn't seem to think the freshmen post are ready for prime time.

Diamond can simply score at this level, and love how fearless she is going to the basket. A true offensive threat with the ball.

Liz--more limited time, but she was about the only one in the first half who aggressively attacked the zone--she has an offensive mentality i love.

Overall, as others have said, I'll take it, given the circumstances and we couldn't make a shot in the entire first half. The press looks midseason ready, as does the starters' conditioning. Good to see that even with Arella going 3-14 from FG, we had three other players in double digits. Zippy and Diamond were unafraid to be aggressive offensively and to pick up the slack. Rebounding will continue to be an issue for the team, will need to continue to stay a focus. Only 10 turnovers though is a very nice stat.

A more limited lineup today, but that's what happens when you've played a total of one non conference game before you get into B10 season. Hopefully the bench gets more opportuniites moving forward.
