I ask every year, but is RU making way with any Blair kids? Seems sooner or later one has to make his way to RU. Seems Stanford is making a nice pipeline there. Just wondering the current staffs relationship with the new Blair staff.

I just got back from Region 1, Paetzall looked good with a first period pin. Faces the 3 Seed in the finals, Mastroeni of Hopatcong. The 220 final should be a good one with 2 talented kids, Robert Melise of P'burg vs Scott Lavelle of DePaul.

Region 1 at Walkill Valley is a very well run Region. Started at 9 am promptly and Semi's over by 10:45.

At Region 2 RU commits :
170 Joe Grello , BC, will get a good test in his final v 2 seed Shane Sosinsky, Norther Highlands HS
195 Kevin Mulligan, BC, will face 3 seed Brian Bonino

Region 6
Brett Donner, Wall, will face 2 seed Blauvelt of Southern HS

Region 7, Matt Correnti, Holy Cross HS (2 very fast pins) faces 2 seed Dashon Burdett, Collingswood HS.

Region 8, Mike Van Brill, Clearview faces 2 seed Josh Clark, Higland

I just wish Flo Wrestling covered NJ Regions so I could watch them all. Actually, I wonder why the cash strapped NJSIAA doesn't sell Flo the streaming rights ?

BOOM! Mackall with the fall in the third. Was up 9-0/12-0 at the time against returning SQ Murphy (Dover).

This was his semi final.

I mean you would hope your D1 wrestling recruits can blow the doors off in Districts and the first match in regions. The talent level should be that much better.

Also, it should be noted Goodale and Pritzlaff were at region 5, presumably watching Mehki Lewis and Stephan Glasgow.

I noticed another B1G head coach with a big red N on his sweater today at Region 5. Assume he was watching the same two wrestlers. $$$$

Brett Donner Region champ with a 13-3 victory setting the all time win's with his 125 win.

Region 1 Final- Brandon Paetzall wins the 132 pound Region title 15-2. On wards to the States at Atlantic City.

Brandon Paetzell is you Region Champ and recorded his 100th win, 15-2.

Any commentary on the style of wrestling from our guys? Yeah, they've dominated, but how's their wrestling actually been so far? Do they rely on strength? Moves? Quickness? Good on top? Bottom?

Nice to follow the recruits. One more big weekend for all of the Jersey kids. We have a pretty good shot to have 3 and maybe 4 state champions.

As expected of all our recruits to crush the districts and regions. Really interested how each individual fair at the states though. I'm expecting 4 or 5 state champs for us.

Mackall, Mulligan, Correnti should win states. Grello and Donner should both be in the finals.. if asked, earlier in the year, I'd say Grello wins this but now I'm leaning more towards Donner . Van Brill is having a great year but he has the tough BC kid, Griffith. Paetzell is back but not sure how he will handle his hand injury. I have high hopes for him, but this weight won't be cakewalk.

I was thinking Correnti, Mulligan and Grello/Donner as state champs. Don't know enough about who Mackall faces in Ohio. Don't they crown more than one state champion per weight class based on school size or some other criteria? Paetzell seems like the wild card.

Ohio does crown 3 champs per weight. Mackall is not the top ranked kid in Ohio at 126, but I am not sure what division all kids are in. I will check when brackets come out.

I agree with your picks of Correnti, Mulligan and Grello/Donner.

The two kids ranked ahead of Mackall in Intermat rankings are both in Division 2, Mackall is Division 1.

I'm from Bridgewater and we're usually not very good at wrestling, but this year we had a solid team including one incredible kid at 182 - Kyle Murphy. His sister, Casey, is the star goalie on the Rutgers women's soccer team and United States youth national teams. Anyway Kyle is 25-0 and ranked #2 in the state in his weight class and has been absolutely dominant. He won region 5 easily with a major decision in the finals. I saw that he's committed to Bloomsburg, and checked to see if they're any good at wrestling and they're not at all (record is 1-18 and they're only win was a 20-18 squeaker over VMI). Would anyone happen to know if we recruited Murphy, or why in the world he's going to Bloomsburg?

He committed to Bloomsburg November of 2015 (before this great season), so going off of his previous stats I would guess RU was not recruiting him heavily. He only qualified for State as a Jr and finished 7th (don't get me wrong is good). I've said this before that RU roster is limited to 30 wrestlers (this is a school rule not NCAA) so it is a numbers game. As the roster stands now with the guys we lose to graduation and the incoming freshman we are at 32 for next year. If the school doesn't allow the team to keep 32 some kids will be dropped (or they may voluntarily leave the team). So that would be one reason we wouldn't have been recruiting heavily.

Now reason two, and this is a testament to the direction of the program he didn't have the stats to be heavily recruited by RU. He didn't qualify for states as a Freshman or Sophomore and placed 7th as a Junior. In the past probably would have been recruited. Lets look at some of our recruits in this Senior class.

Paetzell placed 5th as fresh, 3rd as soph, and was injured last year.

Donner placed 3rd as soph, and wrestled injured last year and defaulted out of tournament (multiple time Region Champ).

Grello 8th as soph, 1st as Jr.

Mulligan 6th as Sohp, 1st as Jr.

Correnti 3rd as Soph, 2nd as Jr.

Mackall (Ohio) 1st as Soph, 2nd as Jr.

Van Brill SQ as Soph, 6th as Jr (has a brother on team)

I hope this doesn't sound like I am disparaging the kid, certainly not my intention. He may go on to Bloomsburg and have a great career but he is not a kid that we should say got away even if he does have a great career at Bloomsburg. RU has to recruit the kids that are multiple placers by their Jr. year and ranked in top 20 in their weights in the National Rankings.

Thanks, totally makes sense.
