Your team is on D clock winding down 8 seconds left attempted pass kicked out of bounds. Clock resets to 20 seconds. Why? Also I think this happens on other situations. Why are you in essence penalizing team for playing good D

Because it's a kick ball? While it is good defense to a certain extent to deny the entry pass, it's also basketball not soccer.

Also a ball that bounces off a moving foot or leg is sometimes not really a kick but treated as such.

But to your point, maybe reset to 10 seconds if the shot clock was inside 10 seconds

More broadly, they changed the clock reset on all offensive rebounds from getting another full 30 seconds to just 20 seconds. Not sure I am liking this change as the season progresses. Seems a bit punitive to teams who work hard on the offensive glass.

Which is the definition of a kick ball... intent doesn't matter, just contact with the foot or lower leg.

I am guessing rationale is that if you are bringing ball up court you have 10 seconds to bring it across mid court. Since you are already getting it across mid court you don’t need those 10 seconds (?)
Also speeds up game

I don’t mind the 20 second reset at all for rebound, as said above, ball is already in half court. Keeps game moving.
The kick penalty is awful as growing up we were all taught that it was a good defensive play and I would guess almost always inadvertent. Most are not purposely trying to kick the ball.

Our guys definitely throw out the kick to prevent inbounds bounce passes, but it's usually inadvertent when the ball is already in play.

You can only get an offensive rebound after missing a shot.

Offense shouldn't get rewarded with a full 30 second shot clock.

This is incorrect. Intent does matter. A ball that accidentally strikes a foot is not a kick ball

Just reviewed the rule, and you're right. In my experience in practice, it's almost always called a kick ball whenever the defense makes contact with their foot, though - intentional or not.

I hate the hack-a-shaq. The offense should be able to refuse free throws and get to inbound the ball from side court with a 20 second clock.

I hate the OREB reseting to 20. If you get the offensive rebound why not get a full possession?
I like the rule change. It makes endgame situations more exciting.

Also most “earned” OREBs lead to immediate put-backs, while the “lucky” long offensive rebounds are the ones where you reset your offense.

So I don’t think you should be rewarded for both missing a shot and getting a lucky long rebound.

I hadn't thought about it in that manner. That rationale makes some sense.

The rule used to be to give you a complete reset of the clock. Setting it to 20 is actually harsher than in the past.
