Rutgers #33

There are schools above us that we would certainly beat. That said, yesterday's loss hurt. I do not think that the B1G gets enough respect, but I am biased. Need to win this week.

Seth Davis had his top 25 in the Athletic this morning and in his comments section he indicated he was intending to have us at #25 until we lost to Iowa. He put Michigan State in instead.

Only 2 Big 10 ranked

#3 Purdue
#18 Wisconsin

Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern, Rutgers, Illinois, Ohio State all receiving votes in that order

The Indiana fascination is comical solely based on a win over UNC.
Big ten is the weakest it’s been in years. Indiana is still overrated but that win at xavier looks better every day now. Nice to have on the resume.

Seems right. THey win yesterday were prob 23-24 imo.

Take care of business at NW. Audige and Buie (who has to be 30 years of age lol) are their maine threats. We best them statistically in everything besides blocks per game. They only average 10~ TOs a game so we have to change that.

Definitely not consistent thinking with Indiana vs. us in terms of injuries. The win at Xavier is a good win for them and I’m not sure they’ve been at full strength since then? Xavier Johnson was a big loss for them. Jalen Hood missed our game. Now Race is out too.

Around here it only counts as an excuse if we lose games because of injury

Its not as good as the win at Purdue

Indiana is running on preseason expectations and beating UNC

Much like i thought

You dont get ranked losing to an unranked team at home by 11
Not that it means crap on 1/9/2023 but explain to me the 16 ranked teams that lost last week , and a few losing to unranked teams and why they are ranked when Rutgers beat the #1 ranked team on their home court and followed that up with a dominant wire to wire win over Maryland a team previously ranked at#13 and who beat a ranked Ohio State team yesterday in the next game after ours. Then a loss to Iowa who just happens to be # 42 in the NET this morning , not the cupcake you claim they are. 3 of their losses were without Murray , which I consider a pretty important part of their team. Arizona almost lost to unranked Washington at home and then lost to unranked Washington State by 13 at home , who hopefully you will agree is not better than a healthy Iowa. How far are you dropping them ? AP voters only dropped them 4 spots. But you want to ignore our 2-1 week ? Purdue only dropped to # 3 after their 2-1 week which was an acknowledgement of how good Rutgers is and maybe Ohio State who they beat with a late game 3. Unranked teams like Kansas State or Iowa State , who might have been been 25th last week in 1 poll , jump 15 and 11 spots. Huge jumps. If you look at all the metrics , NET, Kenpom Sagarin , Torvik , Rutgers is a top 20 team. That is where they should have been ranked between 20-25 . But overall at this date , it means crap except for public perception which would really help Rutgers. We are not a Blue Blood so rankings do influence the casual fan’s perception , so it sucks we are not ranked. Not many teams beating the # 1 team in the country on their court have a better win than Rutgers. Plus we are 11-5 not 9-7.
Whoever voted Duke as a ranked team should have their voting rights revoked for this year. Whoever gave Kentucky votes this week should have their rights revoked forever.

TCU went from being unranked to #17. And two other teams previously unranked are now in the top 20. I think we would have been at least 20 and probably a notch or two higher if we had beaten Iowa. As is, our ranking (unofficial #33) seems fair.

I think our losses against SHU, Temple etc give them some hesitancy to give us such a jump. TCU is 13-2 with two ranked wins and other solid wins.

Buie and Audige are going lights out from 3 no matter how well we defend (I don’t care what their season averages are, both are going to go OFF against us), you can bank on it. Need to bring offense to win.

you read too much into the selection process, most ap writers are not going to dig all that deep and then you have the guys like Carino who isnt a homer and wont put us in the top 25..when you have that issue its hard to see other writers going out of their way.

Rutgers wasnt receiving any votes, had a great win over #1, beat Maryland a team they should be beating and lost to team at home they should beat....RU has 5 losses, what part are you missing about that..just about everyone in the top 25 has a quality win somewhere or a better record than RU. You cant wipe away losses to Temple and SHU

Had RU beat Iowa, RU is ranked 20-23 or so. End of discussion.

Of course schools with names still get benefit of doubt and there is recency bias if you are already in top 25, thats why RU with no votes isnt getting in with a 2-1 week.

AP top 25 does not matter for NCAA selection committee, its all about the NET and at 20 we are in good shape...at the moment.

B1G teams are above average almost across the board yet I would not be surprised if no one is playing in the 2nd weekend of the tournament.

Northwestern is going to be a war
Their offense is abysmal, even worse than ours, and even though I haven't seen their defensive rankings they must be up there with us. It has the making of an ugly game unless we have a few things that work for us.

I feel a little like a broken record, but ranking is meaningless until close to the end of the season. Consistently win games and the team's ranking, along with everything else, will work itself out.

And did anybody actually expect to be ranked after losing to Iowa? Why?

I just didn't understand why people were concerned with where we would be ranked today when we saw what was displayed on the court yesterday. A number infront of our name does not matter when we get embarrassed at home, yeah we got it close twice, but overall embarrassing performance.

I don’t know much about them but it appears they have 3 guards who can score a bunch of points.

On a bright note, Rutgers is the #1 college basketball team in the New York metro area, population 20 million, and #3 team in the Northeast megalopolis, the 50 million population region stretching from Boston to DC.

However, only 1 of the the 62 voters in the AP poll is from the New York metro. The voter is Jerry Carino, a Seton Hall grad who writes for the Asbury Park Press. In contrast, Rhode Island and Connecticut, population 5 million, get 2 votes.

Not a single sports journalist writing for a New York City paper, such as the New York Post, New York Daily News, New York Times, or Wall Street journal gets a vote.

I blame Pat Hobbs, his media department, and the B1G. Pat and B1G honchos talk up the New York media market, and by now should have more than just Jerry voting in the poll.

Of the 5 journos giving Rutgers votes in today's poll, Carino wasn't one of them.

Dick Vitale, a Seton Hall grad and AP voter, also stiffed Rutgers.
