Podcast Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs Resigns and Scrimmage No. 2 Recap!

What I think, and I hate to say it and hope it is not the case, is that he was told he only has a few months to live hence he resigned immediately to spend time with family. If it was a health issue that could be treated, I think he would have taken a leave of absence.

That would make no sense. In that case, leave of absence would’ve made the most sense for every single person involved. The only way leave of absence hurts Rutgers is in a case like Stringer where it goes on so long that it prevents the school from moving on. That wouldn’t be the case in what you suggest and in the interim, RU could start searching for a replacement. By resigning, Hobbs gave up millions of dollars for his family.

Do you know how health insurance works through a public employer? In the private sector you are basically on your own (pay for Cobra) the date you leave or the end of that month. With a medical issue that would be top of mind for me in this situation. I know Hobbs made a good salary but medical is a different animal.

That’s why leaving abruptly with a terminal illness would make no sense. He’d take his sick time and leave of absence for sure in the scenerio described.
