Rutgers Athletics to Host Season-Long Student Tailgate

If it's just an enclosed area that students can go to to tailgate with other students than that should work. If it's anything they tried in the past (no alcohol, corny games set up, etc.) it will fail like every idea before it.

No way they are trying the same thing. Could they be that stupid.

Will they allow beer pong, DJ's playing music, everyone to roam freely without intense police oversight breathing down their necks, will underclassmen be able to go without full fear ... if any of those answers are no or maybe/kind-of, then it has zero chance of success. Also the location is so isolated that it probably would have kind of a dead atmosphere unless its completely packed.

As stated again .. they need a cut-out section of the Blue lot. Or something on the Johnson Park side of the stadium (ideal). You have to make it as convenient as possible. Because the frat houses, bars, and apartments on College Ave are a heck of a lot more convenient and the answer to all the questions above are a YES

Johnson park would be ideal... Let it run like the blue lot until 30 min before kickoff... Then bring in the intense police presence and get them all in before kickoff

I'm not sure what else people want from any official school-sanctioned event. They will never say "underage kids can drink here".

Thats the dilemma of course. You can't sanction it or even make it too easy for them. But for decades it went on and everyone was having a good time (with the understanding it ruins multiple paying alum tailgates in the area). Instead you issue blue lot passes through the RAC the week of and you usher those cars to another section of the lot. Done.

I get the impression that this is sort of what they are doing but directing people to this lot instead of a part of the blue lot.

Of course police are still going to patrol. They will probably have a little more leeway because the area is a bit isolated but it won't be a free for all. So the student organizations (I'm sure mostly Greek orgs) will be able to get parking passes and set up a tailgate. Now they would be stupid to bring in kegs or loads of beer but they can easily set up all the food and have a stash of some beer plus tell guests to BYOB. Behave like reasonably responsible people and you should have a problem.

I suspect if this goes well this year they will look at finding options with more space but if it's a bust they may just say forget it you're on your own again.

I'm pretty sure the school went to the County in an attempt to get use of Johnson Park for student tailgates. Looks like the County said no. Some things are out of their hands.

Only if you keep the Middlesex County Sheriffs officers away. Bunch of assholes.

You just made the list.

On the bright side, the Sheriff's officers that used to spend their day with eyes on my tailgate will now be busy at yours.

At my school, they gave students a designated area to drink (and do whatever you wanted to do in a tailgate), it was kind of fenced in and isolated from anyone else, but police never entered the area unless a fight broke out which was one time I could remember.

If done like this, I can be successful. Back in my day, drinking age still 21, this was how it was done. Responsible fun and tailgating was permitted in a student fenced off area.

The word I hear is that this will be student tailgate area and the students will be held accountable for keeping their area/tailgate under control. It will be monitored, but not cop-quaded and shut down cause a cute girl has a red cup in her hand

Fantastic idea to hopefully give students an area for an American college football tradition!!

Agree, the video makes it seem much more enticing than the sound of it. Seems to me like it wont be long until the cops roll in with their SWAT gators.

No its the parking lot for the intramural fields across from Werblin gym.
Wowsers! I just looked that up, thanks. So the parking lot is to the left of the intramural fields, right across from the Werblin outdoor volleyball courts.
GREAT news: this is a really isolated lot.
BAD news: for anyone that doesn't have a parking pass this isn't a desirable trek from college ave.
Hopefully some popular organizations fully join in and this attracts more students.

Middlesex County Sheriff's dept has been historically notoriously over zealous in prosecuting and patrolling during tail gates. They are the biggest squelchers of student tailgating.
