On January 9, 2007 Rutgers finished with a #12 Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll rankings and #16 in the Bowl Championship Series ranking. All were the highest finishes ever for Rutgers in the modern era.

Retro-pollster Parke Davis awarded Rutgers and Princeton co-National Championships in 1869. In 1882, Rutgers had a fourth place finish with a 6-4-0 record losing home-and-aways to Yale and Princeton, the number 1 and 3 teams in college football that year (Harvard was between them).
