Not necessary. Only reason to extend and reward with extra guaranteed contract is if there is fear of losing him. No one is coming for Kirk.

When I see things like this, I am motivated to give less. Lots of money needlessly squandered.
My guess: Kirk probably was offered HC (or top tier OC) jobs and he turned them down on the condition RU would extend.
Not a chance in hell any P4 wants him, and I doubt any program that might want him as HC could afford him even at his Minnesota salary.
Only thing he was offered was Temple. Which program above Rutgers is offering Kirk an OC gig? I can’t see any. Especially after his crash and burn season at Penn State.
The Dingbats probably heard they offered KC the head coaching job, not realizing it was KC Keeler, who was already hired. Reactively, they opened the purse strings. Kirk, was probably like- "What did I do to deserve this?"
