Rutgers Men's Golf Set to Compete in First-Ever Big Ten Championships in Galloway, N.J.

Weather may cause issues as Friday is iffy and heavy rain and 30mph winds are expected Saturday.

This is RU's 8th B1G Golf Championship. The best finish was 2019 when led by Chris Gotterup's 4th place tie and Shayler Dance's tie for 9th, RU finish 6th. Interestingly the individual who finished 1st that year, the Illini's Adrien Dumont De Cassart, will be teeing it up again this weekend.

Last year RU finished 11th. Rutgers will likely go with the same 5 they've used most of the Spring and the 5 overall they've played pretty well this Spring. Going into this week they've improved their national ranking by 35 spots over this time in '21-'22. I like the coach's enthusiasm but making the pre season might require winning the B1G. If memory serves over the past few years only a couple teams have made the NCAA's with a ranking 60 or over if they didn't win their conference but who knows?

Illinois comes in as defending champion. The Illini have won 12 of the last 13 championships and are one of the best teams in the country again. They've won 5 tournaments in the Fall '22 - Spring '23 season. The women's team won the team and individual championship last week so the men are going for the sweep.

B1G Team National Rankings from Golfstat and Sagarin/Golfweek (305 D1 Teams)

Illinois..................#3/#4
Ohio State..........#25/#30
Northwestern....#28/#34
Purdue.................#36/#38
Michigan State...#61/#62
Indiana.................#67/#65
Wisconsin............#74/#67
Iowa......................#76/#74
RUTGERS.............#79/#78
Penn State..........#100/#96
Minnesota..........#103/#104
Michigan.............#112/#125
Nebraska............#113/#106
Maryland............#200/#204

According to Sagarin, Rutgers overall record against other schools played this season is 59-67-2 with a very respectable SOS of #62.

I've been doing some digging and have changed my opinion somewhat. With their position and SOS a good finish might get them an invite provided they play pretty well this weekend. There are 30 conference champ auto bids and checking 3 the chalk is working in RU's favor as Ga Southern won and Liberty is leading in the Final Round. They were all in no matter what. If this trend continues throughout there very well may be enough open spots.

* Pepperdine didn't win yet but Liberty did with North Florida 2nd which doesn't hurt. Oklahoma won the B12 but at least 8, probably 9 teams are going dancing anyway.

I have to admit I go back and forth on an NCAA bid.

Last year 6 B1G teams made the tourney. The lowest ranked team I found so far that didn't win their conference tourney may have been #70 UCF. Two weeks ago RU was #73 or #75, now they've dropped to #78 after an eh result at Purdue. I have to imagine they need a REALLY good finish here.

Not exactly the start you would want. Rutgers finishes the day in 8th place at +27. The 2 teams they had a chance of passing with a good result, Wisconsin and Iowa, shot +15 and +22. Of course there are still 2 Rounds left but the job is tougher.

Rhett Sellers had the best round for RU, a 4 Over 75, good for T13,

It seems the weather and course were the big winners today as the scores were all pretty high across the board.

No surprise Illinois (+8) leads, followed by Northwestern 6 strokes back. After that it's Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Iowa.

Heard thr rain and wind were really bad and the later tee times got the worst of it. Rutgers and MSU are the first off #10 in twosomes. No rain expected but there will be 15-20 mph winds.

Didn't go well for RU today. Their +6 was tied for 12th out of 14, dropping them 2 spots to 10th at +33. The outside chance of the NCAA's is even further outside.

Luke Wells and Weston Jones led RU with Even Par 71's. They were followed by Noah Kumar (73), Rhett Sellers (75). and Xavier Marcoux (78). Jones leads RU individually, currently T23.

The rout is on as Illinois leads by 17 strokes after a team -16. They have 4 players in the top 10 right now with the 5th T13.

Top 5 After 2 Rounds

1 - Illinois....................-8
2 - Northwestern.....+9
3 - Wisconsin...........+15
4 - Indiana................+18
T5 - Iowa...................+21
T5 - Ohio State........+21

Last year they were 11th, so ahead of last year in 10th. Let’s see if they hold on or can move up a spot or 2. Good luck!

After moving tee times back, the B1G tried to get the Final Round in but after some teams getting as far as their 2nd 9, they have cancelled, not postponed the round. It appears Illinois will be declared the winnner and RU will officially finish 10th.

Mac McClear (Ia) and Daniel Svard (NW) would be co-champs with a 2 round score of 3 Under. 4 Illini golfers finished in the Top 10.

If this is indeed the last event, the team had greatly improved over the past 12 months. You can't predict with the transfer crazy thing going on in college sports and people wanting to move on but with the Covid year, RU could possibly have all 5 regulars returning in '23-'24 if both sides so choose.

Looking at NCAA tourney prediction, it is almost certain RU won't make it. The B1G should get 5-7 teams in with Illinois, NW, OSU, and Purdue locks. One of #61 Wisconsin and #64 MSU may be in a last 4 in/first 4 out situation with #73 Iowa not in a great spot.

Rutgers final ranking in Sagarin is #79. This is RU's highest ranking since joining the B1G, beating 2019-20 by 2.

2022-23......79
2021-22.....108
2020-21......93
2019-20......81
2018-19......122
2017-18......140
1016-17.......185
2015-16......180
2014-15......211

The highest Individual ranking I saw was Chris Gotterup at #39 in 2019-20. Of corse he went on to be #1 last year at Oklahoma.

FWIW, the team is by far the highest ranked team in the NE.

So highlighted by Illinois being the #1 seed in the Michigan State Regional, the B1G has 7 teams out of 81 in the NCAA Regionals.

#10 Seed Michigan State and #11 Seed Wisconsin join Illinois in the MSU Regional

#5 Seed Ohio State and #11 Seed Indiana are in the Auburn Regional

# #7 Seed Purdue is in the Clemson Regional

#5 Seed Northwestern is in the UNLV Regional

At #70 Middle Tennessee appears to be the lowest ranked team that didn't win their conf championship. Iowa (#72) must be po'd that the Final Round of the B1G was cancelled.

Mac McClear (Iowa) and Ben Warian (Minn) were selected as 2 of 30 individual entrants.
