Right on par with Cleveland State--Hi Gary Waters!

A look at the recruiting expenditures of 231 programs from 2009-2013,
compiled by USA Today on the eve of the NCAA Tournament, shows the
following:
-- Rutgers ranks 73rd overall with a five-year average
of $99,932. Directly ahead of the Scarlet Knights are Delaware
($102,578), New Mexico State ($100,383) and Long Beach State ($100,072).
Directly behind them are George Mason ($97,671), Missouri State
($97,208) and Cleveland State ($95,167), the last of which his guided by
former Scarlet Knights coach Gary Waters.
-- Among the current 12
Big Ten schools listed (under the law, Penn State and Northwestern do
not have to reveal their finances), Rutgers ranks 11th. Only league
champion Wisconsin, whose roster is comprised of seven homegrown players
and eight others from either Minnesota, Illinois or Ohio, spent less at
a shocking $59,719.

Hermann replied through a spokesman, "We assess the investment we need
to make each year based on where our recruiters need to travel and the
number of positions we are looking to fill for that class."

Just proves the old adage you get what you pay for. And, Wisconsin is the exception that proves the rule.

My quick response is that this is embarrassing, however, on one level it makes sense in that we have traditionally recruited locally and costs would be less. With Eddie focusing more outside of the NJ it would make sense to see that figure go up. Keep in mind, these are actual expenditures and not what was necessarily available to go recruit. No crime in coming in under budget. The crime is the end product on the floor!

So the recruiting budget is less than the bonus CVS just received for making the tourney. Sure, that makes sense.

Not in any way supporting what we spend on basketball, relative to our peers, but these numbers have to be taken with a little bit of a grain of salt.

If a team in the midwest or south wants to recruit a kid from NYC... they have to fly to NYC and pay for hotels/food/rental cars/etc. We just have to pay for parking.

We'll incur less costs for the same kid, in that scenario.

Given the number of kids within fairly reasonable driving distance for our coaching staff, it makes sense that our overall costs would be lower than a team that has to fly from a more remote location to urban centers to do their recruiting.

Again, that said... we aren't supporting our program enough as a whole, but even if we had an equal level of support as some of the top programs, we'd still probably incur less in recruiting costs than they would.

No scholarships kids from New Jersey on next year's roster. Three from New York. None from Philly.

Wow. I highly doubt that has ever happened before.

OPINION: Rutgers should expand, improve athletic facilities
Except for spelling Phil Sellers' name wrong, it's pretty much on the money.

0-for-Jersey. 0-for-Philly.

I guess Eddie should be glad that he didn't need to pass a course from Professor Zags to get his RU degree. So did Zags misjudge how long the odor would last or did he over-estimate Eddie's recruiting ability or his ability to hire the right staff? The highlights --

If he does end up getting hired as the next head coach at Rutgers, Eddie Jordan must begin work immediately to establish strong recruiting ties from New York to Washington, D.C.

"I think people are going to like his background," Jay Gomes of NJHoops.com told SNY.tv. "The fact that he went to Rutgers, went to the NBA, coached in the NBA, coached a lot of great players in the NBA, so he can help kids get to that level. He's got to hire a staff that knows the right people who will help him get the right kids."

Obviously, in New Jersey, Jordan must work to establish relationships with St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley, St. Benedict's coach Mark Taylor, Patrick School coach Chris Chavannes and Hudson Catholic coach Nick Mariniello, as well as the leaders of key AAU programs like the Playaz Basketball Club and Sports U.

[/I]
"He just needs to do a good job of staying involved with New Jersey kids and really building solid relationships with the coaches," Pope John coach Jason Hasson told SNY.tv. "Rutgers is a great school but kids won't go to the school alone without a solid relationship with the head coach. That starts by being seen in the gym a lot right away and then by starting and keeping dialogue going throughout the recruiting process. I think now that they are going to the Big Ten, that they offer something that no one else in New Jersey can but without trust and comfort level in the recruiting process players won't go there."[/I]

Cazzie Russell played for Michigan way before the Sellers/Dabney/Jordan team. Ricky Green was the Michigan star.

AGREE....BUT, it kinda makes sense. The Rice scandal was all over the New Jersey/ New York / Philly news. Recruits from that area saw Rutgers getting hammered in the press just about every day for weeks. RESULT....local recruits are not busting through the doors to join up with Rutgers right now.

In fact, he played in the NCAA's against Bill Bradley and Princeton.

RU hired a coach who last was in the coaching game as an asst back in 1991.

Of course he is not going to have many, if any local recruiting contacts...and thats the risk of bringing in someone like Jordan with zero HS or AAU contacts.
