Nova (hoops and school) and Seton Hall especially have thrived due to mistakes on Rutgers' part. Nova has become a well reputed "safety school of the mind/leisure) for many studernts who have heard of the lifestyle at RU (actually improved recently) and are too scared of city life and a big campus to attend RU. They are likely "Wright"-the transition isn't easy.
A bit surprised Piscataway Mike includes Nova. Problem with my great buddy and broth is that sans vacations, Rutgers games and conferences they have never spent time outside of NJ. They know Rutgers' history though.has thrived because of Rutgers' mistakes in part. "Safety school for the mind/lifestyle" (easier life for the gutless biffs and muffys of upper middle and middle class NJ scared to attend RU. They may actually be "Wright"-they are too used to suburban life and having it easy vs the city life/running around at RU).
Nova has a great coach in Wright.. Average to above average condensed campus and average at best area. I used to drive past to work out every day and still don't remember the campus. I have better memories of my INITIAL visit to Chapel Hill. When Wright leaves or retires they better have an equivalent replacement because Bryn Mawr ain't Chapel Hill or the gothic Dook campus. As is look at how many years Nova has been ranked top 5 only to fall short (they won it all last year-and don't forget if the Carolina players' family didn't take in that player who took the winning shot against UNC no way that guy makes it to Nova to make that shot (another classic 'bad move").
Villanova may always be decent but not top 10 decent (no way top 5)-at least not on a regular basis. They have recruited well in NJ at the expense of RU so if Pikiell gets this program going I can see Pikiell creating somewhat of a "wall"- picking up some 4-5 star players that might head to Nova instead. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens within the next recruiting class or two. I don't think it out of the question with the new facilities Rutgers can outrecRUit Nova-maybe even most years. At least on par or close. There's no reason other than cheating/lesser aademics (and they have that rep) that Seton Hall should outrecruit RU if Pikell builds the program. Rutgers used to be better or on par than these programs (see below). I think if Pikiell builds the program and a new arena is built Rutgers could easily be a perennial top 20 program. The hoops program (or should I say athletic department, for the most part, has totally been mismanaged for most of the past 30-35 years. Certainly wasn't a priority under Pernetti and Schiano.
Back in the late 70's and early 80's when we were in the Eastern 8 with Nova Rutgers was one of the two top 2 teams in the East. Rutgers only had yearly problems with two schools. One was Syracuse. The other may have been Nova (could have been St. Johns) but we pretty much at least used to split with them. In the late 70s (about the time I started following RU) I remember RU taking Georgetown out of the NCAAs twice. UCONN wasn't that good untril the mid 80's I believe. Rutgers used to crush Seton Hall (another not so great reputation school but coach is a good recruiter that can hurt Nova)
by 25-35 1-2 times a year.
Seton Hall (especially-only got into the Big East because Rutgers stupidly? turned down the Big east twice), Villanova, and maybe UCONN's rise over the last few decades is somewhat correlated with Rutgers not initially choosing to enter the Big East. ESPN and TV exploded and Rutgers was (and still is) outside looking in.
