The December 6, 1961 Targum reported that Rutgers head coach John Bateman would assist Michigan State mentor Duffy Daugherty coaching the North at the December 25, 1961 North-South All Star Game in Miami.
Rutgers three players were only topped by Michigan’s four. The three were Alex Kroll, Steve Simms and Sam Mudie.

In addition, Kroll and Simms got invited to the January 6 Senior Bowl in Montgomery, AL but Sam Mudie had to pass up his invitation to the December 30 Blue-Gray Game. The December 26, 1961 Daily Home News reported Steve Simms was the leading ground gainer with 40 yards on 10 carries but the North lost to the South 35-10. “Bateman and Daugherty were presented sweaters as Christmas presents by the North players.”
